My DIY $17 Prius cargo liner made from recycled plastic bottles...

    I was looking to buy a cargo mat, but of course none of them fit quite right and the ones that did fit (Husky, Weathertech, OEM) were expensive ($100+) and did not cover the backseats when folded down.

    My original plan was to follow another thread on here that mentioned using indoor/outdoor door mats but it required cutting and buying waterproof tape/glue to assemble it in the right shape (still didn't cover the backseats). However, while I was at Lowes, I saw something called the Ecorug that was 6x8 and only $17. It says the polyester fibers are made from 100% post-consumer recycled bottles. That set off a light bulb...hey, this will cover everything with no tape, glue or seems!

    I trimmed it down and intentionally left it a little big to protect the plastic from anything with sharp edges. I even had enough left over to make a mat that runs under the legs of my recliner!

    It just happens to be almost an exact match to the factory carpet...

    BTW - this only took me about 30 minutes. Just take out the removable cargo parts and sorta trace it onto the back of the carpet. My tracing was about 2" bigger all around. I then put it in and started hacking off parts that I didn't want. Be careful to not cut the seat belt when trimming around that area!

    Looks better than the mover's blanket I have back there. :p

    The same Eco-rug in my area Lowes is $20. Might have to check it out.

    It's $17.97 in-store here. I used a 10% coupon that made it around $16. :)

    Great idea, I like the way it covers the seat backs when they're folded, and not in the way when seats are up.(y)

    A problem with the Toyota and aftermarket mats/trays is they don't cover the area when seats are flipped down, your's does, and looks good.

    We just throw an old blanket in there, tucked under the rear lip of the floor panel. Big enough to mostly cover the rear seat backs if they're flipped down. But your's looks a lot classier, LOL.

    That's what I have been doing also in my Gen 2 and in my Gen 3. The mat looks a heck of a lot cleaner.

    Great find. Gonna have to check this out see if it's long enough to cover my v cargo area. I too use an old moving blanket right now but when loading/unloading my bikes in the back the pedal grabs the blanket and shifts it around! This looks more form fitting and presumably stays in place much better when loading cargo?

    I made a couple of mats for our Honda Fits using this same material. Our Lowes had it in the floor covering department on big rolls. You could measure out and purchase just what you needed. Just keep in mind that while this will protect from dust, debris and such - it is NOT water proof !

    I made a rear seat well mat out of that same material for my Honda Fit....
    It worked great and was very durable.

    The only reason I spent more and did NOT do this with the Prius, was that especially in the rear hatch area, with the Hybrid Battery present I felt keeping the area as water proof as possible was a potentially important issue.

    So I bought The Weather Tech cargo Liner.
    It however doesn't cover the back of the seats when they are up....

    Some weekend I might make a liner like this and use it in conjunction with my weathertech liner...
