Someone pulled out in front of me yesterday trying to make a left turn across 2 lanes of traffic and didn't see me coming. This resulted in a collision. It appears my 2006 Prius my be repairable, there was no fluid leaking and no warning lights illuminated on the dash. Upon further inspection today I have noticed that the radiator in smashed and well as the Hybrid Synergy Drive being pushed back from its original position. Any idea if this is repairable or do you think it will be totaled? I am having it towed to Rohrich Toyota in Pittsburgh, PA on Monday so they can give me an estimate. Below are pics, including before and after of the Synergy Drive.

The coolant thermos is in that front corner. There is a good chance that your 2006 will be totaled.

I will eventually be OK but my car is not. Sad thing is I got a GREAT deal on my car when I bought it in March 2010. If it is totaled I won't be able to afford a similar model. :(

    How sad!!
I wouldn't give up TOO fast. From the pictures: front bumper, radiator, cross beam & hood, driver's side quarter panel looks OK. Can't tell about the headlight or fog light (worthless IMHO anyway). Besides the coolant pump, the inverter pump and inverter are also behind the crunched area. I think the latter is an expensive bit if it was destroyed.

Are you SURE the HSD is pushed back? Not just a visual thing related to the black plastic part or because the crossbeam is creased? I think it would take A LOT to move either the ICE or the HSD.

Looks like the air bag(s) didn't deploy; am I right? Could be this is fixable if you're very firm with the insurance co that only a first class shop will do.

Fixable, but the costs will add up pretty quickly. If the radiator is damaged, then the AC condensor is too, plus lots of little expensive items that reside up front. That HID headlight assembly is not cheap either. Probably will be totalled based on cost of repair.

I agree. Even replacing the rear bumper cover of my Prius and replacing an energy absorber (?) was >$1100, IIRC. Someone wasn't paying attention when they were back out of their parking spot at a mall, so I had my rear bumper cover knocked off.

Repainting the front bumper cover and replacing a black plastic strip of my Z (when the auto shippers did slight damage to it) was >$900.

Correct. The air bags did not deploy. I am taking the car to a Toyota dealership that has a collision shop on Monday. I plan on pointing out to them the fact the the Inverter has been displaced. I'd rather the car be totaled than to have it repaired unless I can get it to Steve's shop in Indiana..

If they are going to total it, demand they pay fair market value for today, which will more than likely be more than you paid.

It is hard to tell (since as already mentioned a lot of very important things like the inverter/coolant thermos) have bee moved/displaced. But it is better to drive a repaired Prius then a used anything else. Some insurance companies make you go to their shops, others let you chose and they pay them directly, others just write you a cheque and you never have to fix it if you don't want to. If you can get a cheque or have them pay your choice directly, then people here can help point you towards good repair places.

Also before this happens, take the car (or have it towed) to a place that knows their hybrids or at least the dealership. A general purpose mechanic may not know that the Prius even has a coolant thermos or that any car even exists with such a complex system.

It certainly is repairable. I rebuilt mine with a similar front end accident, with significantly more damage. The question is, what is the current value (before the accident) and the salvage value. If the cost of repair + salvage value is greater than the value of the car, it will be totaled. Check the cost of buying a vehicle in similar condition, and insist on getting that if the car is totaled.

I am so sorry. My 2005 Prius was in a front end crash with a pickup, so it was not a bumper to bumper hit, and they did not total the vehicle. I needed a new hood and latch, bumper cover, license bracket, grille, headlight assemblies, radiator support and tie bar, and clear bra and they repaired the a/c condensor. The cost was $3510.22. I hope that gives you some idea of what you might be looking at. Good luck with your vehicle!

I will try and find out tomorrow how the insurance plans on reimbursing me. If I get a $10k estimate from the dealer and they cut me a check I will ship the car to Autobeyours in IN to be repaired. I really don't trust the dealership to restore the car to like new condition, but I do trust Steve Woodruff.

The problem I face is if the car is totaled I will not be able to buy a comparable Prius. Mine is fully loaded with Nav, JBL, Leather, Bluetooth, Backup Camera, HID's and Fog Lights. The current KBB value of my car is $16,300 and I owe $12,700 on the loan. If the car is totaled and I have $3k cash to put towards a new Prius I will have to settle on one with cloth interior and less options. I've seen used Prius' going for $19,000 - 27,000 at dealerships.

I just had a dent the size of a foot (yes someone vandalized it by kicking my 2011) repaired on my door and it costed over $1500.

I should add I had a $250 deductible. It was going to be cheaper but they could not get the crease to look perfect and had to order a new door shell and blend the paint on the drivers side of the car.

Seriously?! We are kick-damage brothers! Someone vandalized my car by kicking the passenger side door and leaving a foot sized dent in it. It happened while the car was in READY and I was inside of it... I guess it was so quiet they figured nobody was home.

0 out of pocket since the police arrested him on the spot. Damage estimates were $1200 to $2500 just for the ding because of the OEM crease and it was within 18" of the other panels so it needed to be blended into the surrounding areas.

Exactly the same story with me. Too bad I didn't catch the person who did it.
