My 2004-5 is damaged. Need used parts: airbags, RT Tail light, and all parts ahead of the engine

My 2004 Prius has front end damage. The frame rails seem OK. I need all parts ahead of the engine - hood, fenders, w/shield, front bumper & reinforcement & cover, headlights, radiator & AC condenser, airbags. I have the radiator support. Can someone please tell me all the parts I need and the best place to buy them (cheap, aftermarket when possible)? My bodyshop is quoting me dealer prices, and he says a used front clip is very rare/costly and I would save $ buying individual parts to rebuild it. Can someone also quote me the labor hours to rebuild it with individual parts - everything ahead of the engine (the engine is intact). I will need the AC recharged, which I heard needs a special compressor oil. After a front end collision, will I need the dealer to do anything with the Synergy system after the bodywork is done? Also, I want to put in HID headlight assys (I don't believe the car had HID, but how can I tell - using the VIN?). Can someone comment on this? I also need a RT tail light for 2004-5 Prius. Thanks!

If your body shop has quoted you a repair price, the itemized quote should show all part numbers that are required for the repair. Once you have your list of part numbers, let Google help you by searching for salvage dealers that have Prius parts for sale.

If your car had HID headlights it would also have fog lamps. I do not think it will be very easy to correctly retrofit HID lights to a non-HID vehicle.

You asked whether it is necessary to have any work done to the hybrid drivetrain. This depends upon whether the drivetrain was damaged in the accident. If not, then nothing is required.

Yes, a special AC compressor oil is required.

Not sure why you are asking for a labor hours quote. The only useful quote would be from the individual or shop that is tasked with performing the repair job, and that entity would not be able to provide a quote without inspecting the existing damage.

Thanks Patrick for the helpful reply. The bodyshop is quoting around $4500 for the parts (all new, some are aftermarket). And $2400 for labor and paint. I need to find used parts to get the price down to closer to $5k total, not $6900. I think I can do it with used parts and luck. Plus I have some of the original parts from the wrecked front end.

I want to install HID headlights instead of non-HID. I heard the HID bulbs are 1-filament, and a electrically actuated mirror inside the headlight assy changes the aim. If the housings are interchangeable, I think some basic wiring can make them work. If HID was available in 2004, maybe the wiring is already there? For this, I need some advice before buying anything.

So, how do I tell (VIN?) which model I have? It is JTDKB22U040016896.

There are two ways that you can tell if your car has HID headlights. One way is to see if it also has foglamps. Since you did not respond to that idea previously, I assume that the frontend damage is so severe that you cannot determine whether foglamps existed. However, note that if foglamps exist, the headlight switch stalk will have a rotating ring that turns the foglamps on and off.

The other way that you can tell is to get under the rear of the car and look at the rear beam suspension. If the car has HID headlights, you will see a height control sensor that is attached to the beam on the driver's side. The idea of this is that as the rear of the car drops down due to a heavy load in the hatch, the headlight leveling ECU will note this and move the headlight aim downwards.

Therefore, this means that the HID Prius has a headlight leveling ECU. This assembly is located behind the glove compartment, near the engine ECU.

If your car was not equipped with HID to begin with, it may lack the correct wiring harness for the foglamp switch, the headlight leveling ECU and the height control sensor. This is why I suggest that retrofitting HID is not a trivial exercise.

For more details, you may want to obtain repair manual info for your car, at techinfo.toyota.com

You will probably want to study the electrical wiring diagram for HID vs. halogen headlight equipped Prius, to determine whether other issues exist that I have not already described above.

I will look for the foglamp control ring on the headlight switch. Yes, the front end is missing. I bought the car with damage, b/c I could not afford to buy a running car for the prices they are getting (even salvage cars). I asked the dealer today what options "package" I had, and he didn't know. From my VIN, he said I had keyless entry, push button start, cruise control, engine immobilizer, and 6 speakers. He said maybe package "H"? I'd be surprised if Prius used a different wire harness for models with HID vs. without, for the same model year. But you never know. Anyway, thanks Patrick.

autobeyours.com, I didn't look to see where you're located before posting, but if you need that much rebuild you might want to take it there, in southern indiana.

He buys salvaged prius and rebuilds them.

For that kind of money, $4500, try going to local auction to see if there is any
salvaged Prius with front-end intact. If you are lucky, you can bid one and sell the
rest of parts you don't need on eBay. Actually not just money, it also save you time
to look for parts if the bid price is near $5000.

Just an alternative for you to ponder on.

Are you looking for one or both air bags?

Check eBay....that will give you a good idea of the surprisingly large amount of after market collision parts are available at very reasonable prices.
