Semi truck smashed into my backside on highway 2 hours ago. My 2001 Prius is officially dead. 153,000 miles; averaged 50 MPG over its lifetime. At least the last 80,000 miles of my ownership. Brand new traction battery. Sad.

Hope everyone is ok and maybe you'll consider a Gen III Prius liftback/c/v/PiP. Maybe even the insurance money, if there is any involved, can help purchase a well cared for Gen II.

I would def keep the traction battery and resell.

Sorry, it was not daylight out when I was near the car. And I have an old, old simple phone. Good point about the traction battery to be sold. I am feeling a bit groggy from it. I think I'll be okay.

Check with your insurance company before you yank and sell the battery. Whatever salvage company that buys it from the insurance company will definitely miss it and they'll probably come knocking.

Be careful, the salvage value might be higher than the replacement value and the insurance company may claim they owe you nothing for the vehicle. :(

Now, about that Chevy Volt ... go take a test drive.

I think my time here is officially done. I pick up my replacement car. It's not a Prius. Fare thee well oh Prius comrades!

My wife felt that I might have used up my available 'good will' or blessings or luck in not being more severely injured or killed in this accident and told me I needed to get a bigger car. Lexus ES. I know I'll miss 50 mpg. Oh well.

That's two people in a day who went from a Prius to a Lexus ES: Sad to go, but moving on, thanks | PriusChat

I'll ask you as I did in that thread, did you get a redesigned 2013 model ES? If so, is it a hybrid model as it gets 40 city 39 highway. If not what year ES did you get? I do love the step up in materials when getting a Lexus.

A friend at work has that body style (not sure if it was a 2000 but it was that generation) and he has over 140k on it never having any issues. Good luck with your new vehicle, sorry to see ya' leave the family. Hopefully one day a prius will find its way back into your household. :)

Telling me that would probably have ended up with me getting a new wife.

Edit: On the other hand, that Rav4EV I drove last week was pretty nice.
