I think this was a bit of editorializing. I filled out a web form and asked it to be forwarded to the editor, well see

I'm taking a meek tact, but didn't want to start off yelling at them. This one may have just slipped by. Definitely is ment to be unnecessarily alarming.

    Crazy media!

    That was quick... reply

Gotta think up a measured response.

I wouldn't push this too hard, of the articles written this one is pretty even handed. They acknowledge the safety features, note it's just a matter of taking a few extra seconds to be sure, etc. Not suggesting it's more dangerous, just additional dangers to consider...and that's true.

I do think it could have been written a bit differently... A title like "Hybrids designed with crash safety in mind" for a title would have been a more positive way to spin it rather the "It could kill you" line at the beginning.

If you write anything I'd paraphrase my second paragraph above stating that you feel it could have been written with a positive connotation rather than a negative one...or at least with a more neutral tone.

This is not the only article like this. I wonder how many people will die because rescue workers or bystandards are afraid to help after reading something like this.

The best way to respond to this kind of FUD, IMHO, is to point them to Toyota's Material Distribution Center for "HYBRID AND ALTERNATE FUEL VEHICLE EMERGENCY RESPONDER INFORMATION". The Prius specific article is HERE, but there is info for all alternative fuel Toyota vehicles.

    The information is readily available.

Well, if rescue workers have been trained (and they shouldn't be going into a situation involving a hybrid if they haven't), then they should know they have no reason to be afraid. As for bystanders, maybe they shouldn't get involved without at least reading about the potential dangers. Certainly they won't have "jaws of life" available to them anyway.

The title of the article was in-your-face provocative. Having a photo of a raging fire didn't exactly help.

Most people skim an article like this, reading the title and a sentence or two.

Another one of those, "I wasn't slamming hybrids" article.
