Could be a job for the ScanGauge; open when above 40C but at speeds lower than 60kph might not be so good for engine heat loss during pulse and glide in cool weather. Has anyone blocked the upper vent yet?

Slightly disappointed to hear about the winter control mode being active below 5C (40F). It was for those situations I used to grill block on the Gen 2 and Gen 3!

Are any of you who have these active shutters going to be grill blocking yourself below these temperatures, and if so, by what method?

Perhaps we could harvest wayward pedestrians using our stealth mode. That should block the air vents suitably! :sneaky:

It's still mostly closed (until they come up with a heated grille shutter option).

Perhaps the owners closest to the Arctic circle will be the inventors and instigators of an improved method. I shudder to think how cold it gets way up north, ( no, I don't mean Yorkshire @kithmo)!

Aye, it's grim up north lad, I wouldn't be surprised if my grill shutters seize up eventually with my low miles and short journeys.

Perhaps with the cold mornings here in the UK the 5C partial close will soon come into effect, if they stay in that position at slow speeds it might help steady the fall off in mpg. Something to watch for.

Last winter in Cornwall the car reported average fuel consumption between 55 & 65(UK)mpg and that was on the first 6 months of ever driving a Prius....
.. and No, I don't dawdle behind the wheel.

What about wiring a small heat source near the ambient temperature sensor to fool it into thinking it's above 5c.

Likely simpler to just modify the signal coming from the sensor to say that the temp is over 5C.

The servos probably aren't strong enough to open the shutters in the event the lower grill becomes clogged up with snow and ice Thus the reason for the winter mode. When it is that cold, blocking the front of the grill is the KISS solution over messing with the sensor.

There's a new video on YouTube from WeberAuto on the gen 4 (2017 Eco) that shows and tells you just whats in the entire cooling system including a segment on the active shutters. Starts around the 12 minute mark.
If you really want to know the how and whys of our Prius's, these videos are very informative (highly technical too, as they're targeted at automotive techs, but good for the owner to know to in case something stops doing what its supposed to do...

Thanks for posting. I had already found some of the Weber videos. Only complaint I have is that he talks VERY slowly! :)

I suppose if he spoke faster there'd be a huge gap before the end of the clip. :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:
