    Hi
I have a MK1 Japanese import NW10 can anyone verify what the rear bumpers wre made of on the originAL model?

I ask because having had mine come back from a repair shop the new bumper fitted seems considerabley thinner flimsy plastic, and I actually thought it was metal of some description before that.

When I asked the repair centre they said it was plastic but no longer had the original part that they had taken off,but that this new part was from toyota.

    Am i being paranoid?

The NHW10 bumpers have black rubber protection.
If the rear bumper does not have such rubber protection, it's for NHW11 Prius.

    Thanks for the reply

I have since established that the original part was in fact plastic and yes it does have the black rubber strip around it,however ive been racking my brain to try and establish why it felt so flimsy in comparison and there are a few posibilities that I can think of after reading further info on this forum

    1) The underside lining had been removed and not replaced therefore not supporting the bumper cover at the bottom as it originally did?

    2) The new part has ben reduced in quality - rigidity? Possibibly not an original toyota part?

    3) The foam energy absorber material had not been fitted behind the bumper cover?

I posed these questions to the repairers representative who had informed me that the car was going to be safety checked by a toyota main dealer
my only issue with this is because its a Jap import will the uk dealer actually know what to look for?

The repairers rep said that the foam energy impact reducer would of been fitted as it would of come attached to the new bumper cover?

I am assumimg that the basic construct as shown in the 2005 manual for the rear bumper components posted on this site (whats behind rear bumper)would be pretty much the same for the original Prius Japanese model NHW10

Now im pretty sure that ther was in fact a lining covering the underside of the car before it went in for repair, because I dont ever remember seeing the underside of the spare wheel compartment. I say this in anticipation of the repairer denying that there ever was one and would certainly appreciate anyone who knows the MK1 (NHW10)Prius can confirm this?

Sorry for the long winded post but this repair job has turned into a bit of saga and I just want my car back in a safe and complete condition.
    Thank again

toyota calls it the "outer wheelhouse" which goes around the rear wheels, this partly holds on the bumper to the quarter panel. Another thing that can cause flimsyness is the lack of a bumper reinforcement bar in the rear.

"The repairers rep said that the foam energy impact reducer would of been fitted as it would of come attached to the new bumper cover?"

the absorber is not fitted to a new bumper cover, its a completely different part that actually goes onto a reinforcement bar inside the rear bumper.
