Hybrid and electric cars were the rage when gas prices where high. The grandfather of the category has been the Toyota (NYSE: TM) which recently fell on very hard times. Sales of the hybrid were off 26.7% to 11,027 in June and 25.2% to 67,405 for the first six months. Incentives on the Pruis have dropped to .9% for 72 months.

The Prius first came off the production line in 1997. Toyota has sold 3.7 million worldwide since then. Recently sales have been challenged by an army of other hybrids and the new found attraction of all electric cars like the Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) Model 3 which will be priced at $35,000 before government incentives, that could be several thousands of dollars more. That will bring the car to about the same price level as a well-outfitted Prius. Granted, the Tesla will not be available until 2017, but the company has several hundred thousands of orders.

Virtually every large global manufacturer has one or more hybrid models. This was not the case when the Prius first hit the market. Even Toyota current has hybrid and FCV (fuel cell vehicle) of its Camry, Avalon, RAV4, Highlander, and Marai models. In a sense, Toyota competes against the Prius.

Honda (NYSE: HMC) has seven hybrid and FCV vehicles. Ford’s (NYSE: F) flagship division have five.

All of the major manufacturers have started work on electric vehicles which will put pressure on hybrid sales. The most visible of these from U.S. manufactures is GM’s (NYSE: GM) Chevy Bolt which America’s large car company says will outsell Tesla models by a mile

The Prius is lost, virtually, in an ocean of new competition. And, there is not evidence that the ancient hybrid can battle its way back into the lead it once held. The flood of competition is too great, and being first to market no longer has any value.

Interesting post, there are two other post Toyota Dumps Prius As Sales Collapse By Douglas A. McIntyre July 3, 2016 | PriusChat & Anyone willing to be interviewed? | PriusChat
The first post is copy from the original article from a person that owns GL550 which is no longer in production and other is a person that called himself a "journalist working on a story about the so-far slow sales of the new fourth-gen Prius." Suddenly there are no other news to report than Gen 4 Prius sales being slow due to competition from other manufacturers or whatever reason(s).

    Another Apple is dying article.

The author has no even superficial understanding of the Prius market, nor the technical dominance of the Prius in the hybrid realm of cars.

    Very slanted and illogical piece.
The author uses incorrect facts without reference, and in some cases, uses correct facts, but makes false comparisons.

Love the line about other companies having numerous hybrid models while Toyota started with only one.
Compare how many those companies had when Toyota had just one (the answer would be one or none), or compare how many hybrid models Toyota has NOW with how many the other manufacturers have now.

And the comparison, especially when talking about sales numbers and market share, with vehicles that aren't even on the market yet is rather silly.

The future market share as hybrids is a very valid question. When talking about Toyota specifically, I fully expect them to continue being the biggest seller of hybrids.

Americans are a fickle bunch, and it will bite them once again when gas prices rise and they're stuck with a big vehicle that gets lousy mileage and they owe more than its worth. No wonder so many people live paycheck to paycheck.

if you liked this report from yahoo news, see another one from prof muller at uc berkley, who has repeatedly said that electric cars are a fad, batteries will never reach nirvana, tesla will go bankrupt when wall street realizes they are backing a loser, and government subsidies end, and gasoline cars will hit 100 mpg in the meantime, solving all our problems.

There is a reason why I do this: May 2016 Dashboard Summary | PriusChat

But something else is going on with this Murdoch news property, the Wall Street Journal. Murdoch is notorious for using his news properties to invent a narrative that is not accurate. Not him directly but the executives he puts in place propagate policies and directives that lead to nonsense like this.

    One thing from the article:
Incentives on the Pruis have moved aggressively to .9% for 72 months to clear inventory before the next model year of the hybrid arrives.

Six to seven months ago, there were inventory clearances for the Gen-3 Prius to make room for the 2016 Gen-4. I know because both the Fayetteville and Huntsville Toyota dealers told me. So instead of the more accurate "Toyota making room for 2017 Prius", the title becomes a lie.

We know that with the 2017 Prius the TSS-P will become a universal option. A little late for me but I could be surprised if the 1.5 kW inverter, towing package and the rear wheel drive were options. You know, treat the Toyota USA customers with at least the same respect as our Japanese friends. Then I might have to trade in our Gen-3 ... but I'm keepin' the BMW.

ps. I sent an email with the facts and data to the reporter with no idea if he'll even read it. Much less, respond.

    Yep. Crazy!

And now, the author or someone decided to revise the headline to add the word inventory, so it now reads "Toyota Dumps Prius Inventory As Sales Collapse". Toyota Dumps Prius As Sales Collapse - Tesla Motors (NASDAQ:TSLA) - 24/7 Wall St. is an example of the previous wording.

Hilarious that he says things like "Honda (NYSE: HMC) has seven hybrid and FCV vehicles". Uhh... their sales are minuscule (May 2016 Dashboard) as numerous ones have been discontinued such as the Civic Hybrid, Gen 2 Insight, ILX hybrid, and CR-Z. '16 Accord Hybrid was dropped too.

They haven't leased/sold any FCX Clarities this year...

I think we need to add this guy to our hybrid/EV moron list to see what he comes up with next.

Yep on all of the above.

It's crazy about the short term memory like a goldfish. I really do wonder about the battering ram of death class SUVs (e.g. full-sized ones like Tahoes, Suburbans, Escalades, Navigators) when there's no actual need (or they're needed for under say 2 or 3% of the days of the year). In my area, most of those are driven solo and/or w/minimal cargo and passengers. Can those folks actually "afford" it now, despite the cheap gas prices or do they actually have no savings and are busy trying to pay off the vehicle?

Even some folks w/medium or small SUVs could probably be just as well-served by a medium-sized decent hybrid (e.g. HyCam or Prius) for 95+% of their driving, while getting double or more the mileage.

Many of us have harped on this on various threads here, including Apparently America still doesn't get it | PriusChat that got locked long ago, for some reason.

The only hybrid sales Prius is losing (to competition from similar hybrids) is to Toyota itself in the form of RAV4 hybrid. So Toyota is maintaining hybrid leadership, like totally at the moment.

Yes, in America, Congress is subsidizing and favoring plug-ins, so that cuts into hybrid sales. Yes low gasoline prices (I am predicting below $1/gal) in many states by Feb_2017 cuts into hybrid sales too.
