But how long will it take for the military to make back the hybrid premium? The gas-only HEMTT costs a mere $200,000 to $400,000 so it'll be interesting to see how much this hybrid will cost the taxpayer. Perhaps the Army will get a tax credit eh?

Well, first you have to see what the actual price difference is.

But, the fuel savings alone will be tremendous. It's not just the cost of the fuel, it's also the cost and risk of transporting the fuel to where it's used.

It also apparently has some other benefits.

"it generates enough electricity to power a city block or hospital" - So you don't have to transpor separate generators. And its not just transporting the generators a few miles on the ground. You don't have to use ships or planes, and you can carry less equipment.

"The hybrid technology can be far-reaching, said Schmiedel. Commercial vehicles such as garbage trucks and emergency vehicles all could benefit from using less fuel" - so there's a potential Civilan Benefit which could be very far-reaching.

"In tweaking the ProPulse technology, Schmiedel said engineers created dozens of other perks, such as shrinking vehicle weight and placing engines in a way that makes maintenance easier. A specialized technician used to spend up to 24 hours swapping an engine but now any mechanic can do it in 20 minutes." - That's nothing short of amazing, and a tremendous boon to operational effectiveness.

Seems like a win-win-win situation to me, if the price is reasonable. The possible savings are mind-boggling.
