Miles on OEM tires before replacement?

I had the OEM Yokohama Avid S33D's and only had 32,000 miles when tread was down to 4/32 and it was time to replace. I ran my tires at 40/38 and rotated every 5k miles. Tire wear was even across all tires.

OEM tires do not have the same tread depth or mileage that a new tire will have. Most on here have had similar results while others have been able to get unbelievable mileage out of their OEM tires.

 

I have the OEM tires on my car, it's at 33K miles and they are all at 5/32nds. I'm switching to a snow set pretty soon but will probably be replacing the 17's in the spring when I put the wheels back on.

 

OEM Yokohamas - 44 PSI fronts, 42 PSI rears. Rotated every 5,000 miles (except once when I went 10,000 miles).

51,000 miles and had 2 tires with 3/32 tread remaining (the ones that spent the extra 5,000 miles on the rear) and 2 tires with 2/32 tread remaining.

No edgewear or centerwear.

 

why were you running them at 35/35? doesn't the manual recommend a 2 psi pressure differential?

 

My tires came in at 35 PSI all around when I got my car (back in 2010). When I took it in for service, they were intending on upping the PSI to 40 all around. When I asked about why the dealership was going to do that (after laughing, because I knew the answer before asking the question) they acknowledged that it was to address concerns drivers had about lower than expected fuel mileage. By preemptively increasing the tire pressure, the MPG's went up and the customers were happy.

Since I was running at 44/42, they just ensured the pressures were set to what I wanted.

Still, I run the offset like Bisco mentioned.

 

I have 39K on the original tires and an starting to look at new ones now. I run 46 PSI front and back. Have them rotated at every oil change. Even wear and no problems so far.

I have 33,000 on my OEM Bridgestone Ecopia 20. They are rotated every 10k miles. The pressure is kept at 34/36. Wearing evenly and should get another 15k at least. These are the best tires I ever had as oem.

 

The original Yoko s33' on the rear were getting cupped and noisy by 25,000. I was lax about rotation, only doing it every 10,000 miles. A lump of mud between wheel cover and wheel messed up the balance enough to badly cup the RR. ( wheel covers since removed to end that problem and show off the better looking stock wheels) Still had an estimated 10,000 life left in the other 3, but decided to change all 4. They were rough riding and noisy with little wet traction, so I had little love for them. I replaced them with my #3 choice, Goodyear assurance Fuel max tires, as that was the only fairly good MPG LRR tire avalible locally at that time. Now with 5.000 miles on them, economy is a bit less than the yoko's, but ride, noise level and traction at 43 psi are so much better than the originals at 38,that I really do not mind the 2 mpg loss.
Interesting that the Goodyears say "Made in Japan" on the sidewall ??

 

It can vary a lot depending on road conditions as well as driving habits. I remember a car book that I had on loan YEARS ago had a map of the US and had different bands/regions corresponding to expected tire life.

I'm not sure if the PiP's tires have any higher load rating than the regular liftback, but if not, I'd expect the tires on PiPs to wear out slightly faster, all else being equal.

 

I had the bridgestones they would have lasted till 50k i replaced them a little before that.

 

I had the Toyo Proxes (215/45 R17) and replaced them just after reaching 60,000 miles. The wear was good, with 4/32 left on two and 5/32 left on the other two. I ran them with a variety of pressures, mainly above 44psi. For the most part, I had them at 46/44, sometimes higher and sometimes lower. I think this helped not only fuel economy but it protected the sidewalls, which have been reported as weak on those Toyos.

My new tires are Michelin Primacy MXM4s. Mileage is down, but handling, quiet and smooth ride are all WAY up.

 

I have the Toyos proxes A20 on our Prius 5 and they are loud! How much of a mpg hit did you get with the MXM4s? I want to get those tires because I been reading that it will make the Prius ride quieter which is what I want but was not wanting to lose too many mpgs. We aren't getting over 41mpg with the Toyos so even if the MXM4s get that I would be happy as long as the ride is better.

 

Yes, the noise was one of the most objectionable aspects of the Toyos. That and wet weather handling (and dry handling). In terms of fuel economy, though, they shined.

The MXM4s are much quieter, have much better handling (wet and dry) and make the ride a little bit more comfortable. The down side is a drop in MPGs. My first 60,000 miles were on the OEM Toyos, and I averaged right at 50 MPG (calculated). I'm just over 600 miles into the Michelins, and it is very clear there is going to be a drop in fuel economy. I would expect the MFD information would be showing me fuel economy around 56 or 57 MPG, but I'm having a difficult time keeping it at just about 51 MPG. Translated to calculated MPGs, this would have me expecting to get about 45 MPGs with the MXM4s, though I would hope the numbers will go up when the tires are a bit more broken in.

I would not spend the money on the Toyos, and I'd much prefer the quieter and safer Michelins. The apparent 10% drop in fuel economy is rather alarming, but I'm expecting it will not stay this large. If it does, it may be time to consider a tire with better fuel economy that the MXM4s but significantly better noise and handling than the Toyos. We've yet to see what could do this in a 17" tire.

 

I had Goodyear OEM, they got noisy and rough around 10K miles. I toughed it out to 40K when the tread was getting pretty low. Went with Michelin Energy Saver A/S

Mileage went up, quieter, smoother. 15K miles in and still happy with them.

One of the things I wasn't aware of when getting the 5 model with the 17" was the lack of choices for good LRR tires. I have looked on tire rack and plan on getting tires from America's Tires(Discount Tires) and the only tires that interest me are the Ecopias and the MXM4s.

 

I was at about 33k on my OEMs and just got a puncuture with too much sidewall damage to repair. I was at 4/32 at 30k rotation, since I had to replace one and it has started snowing I went ahead and replaced them all a few days ago.
