yes. just multiply your mpg x gallons pumped. the car is figuring something similar.

Yes. That's how it knows what to calculate. At 80+ mph, you're really chugging down the fuel.

 

Your previous overall tank mpg will determine what the next DTE value displayed on the dash on next fill up. I once had 629 showed after fill up, but only got 510 driving 70 mph. 629 was inherented from my previous commute tank which came in at 63.2 mpg

The heck? Is there a way to reset the MPG history used in the calculation for the fuel range? I think the previous owner treated Prius as some sort of racing car that when I top the gas tank, I am only getting around 350 miles range. Mine is 2010 Prius III btw.

 

As you use the display button to cycle thru all the different screens, hold the trip button to clear them. However, the distance to empty number is based lightly of fuel level, but more off of injected fuel volume over the last 500-1000 miles. To clear that is a 12v disconnect. Or just drive it a few tankfuls and it self corrects.

 

No not that one. You see, you said the mile range of a full tank is measured by the driving habit as well (the MPG from past several hundreds or perhaps thousands of miles). I want to kind of reset that since the 350 miles max range is probably based on how horrible the previous owner drove this car.

 

How many tanks and miles have you driven since acquiring this car? It doesn't take all that much before it is showing how you have been driving it, not how the previous driver used it.

Put another way, what MPGs are you getting? How many miles are you getting per refill, and how many gallons are you putting in on those refills?

 

That has no effect whatsoever on the actual distance to empty. It's just a prediction and it's rarely correct anyway. As you drive, it'll adjust itself on its own. But it's still just for entertainment. Just watch the gas gauge.

Yes, I did say the distance to empty is figured over the last several tankfuls. It does not use the consumption number the dash shows. It uses a number not shown to the driver. The fill-up (or adding at least 3 gallon)is only a trigger to the computer to reset it.

It uses volume of fuel injected at the engine over distance traveled times programmed USABLE fuel volume. However the hocus-pocus the car does is a guess. The way the number gets better is by driving the car. If you disconnect the 12v, and drive how you normally drive, after 500-1000 miles that number will be within 12-15% of actual. I don’t think the number can get any closer then that. I could be wrong though.

What I keep recalling with these threads: my parent's 58 VW had no gas gauge, and my Dad kept a stick under the hood, would occasionally take off the gas cap and check the level with the stick.

 

Gas gauge? Also when I top of, it'll be around 350 Miles only.

 

The mpg for the past 1,300 miles was around 44 I believe.. I have just got the car recently.. I have put about 1,500 miles..

 

So if it's predicting 350 miles range and you're getting 350 from a tank, I can't see what's wrong (other than getting rather low fuel economy).

Gas gauge. It's the thing that says approximately how much gas you have left.

LOL! I remember lots of times on my old motorcycles, opening the gas cap and sloshing the bike back & forth to try to guess how much was left.

 

The VW had a mechanical reserve, which is maybe better than the current situation. There was a lever under the dash, and if you were on the verge of running dry, turning that lever through 90 degrees would release some sort of floodgate in the tank, let you have a last pint or two. I would think that lever was directly connected, the gas tank was just beyond the firewall.

 

I used to keep a two gallon can in an S-10 that I used to have. It’s gas gauge was broken, and I wasn’t willing to risk snapping the rusted tank strap bolts to repair it. LoL
