    It's probably still cleaner than gasoline considering you have to put a lot of energy into oil to make gasoline which you then use at an efficiency of somewhere around 20%. If you're using coal to provide the energy required to refine the oil then it's definitely cleaner to use electricity from coal.

    Leo, did you even read the article? It says coal generated electricity is cleaner than gasoline and coal-fired powerplants can be cleaned up easier than millions of internal combustion engine tailpipes.

    But will they? Sadly, that hasn't been the trend. In fact, there have been efforts to ease regulations... a step in the wrong direction.

    Of course, coal isn't renewable anyway.

    But coal reserves are so huge (ie cheap) in places like America and China that we had better get this sequestering of emmissions thing figured out and enforced.
