I have a 2007 Prius. The Navigation system is not responsive (black screen). Would I be able to swap the dead nav system for a basic (non-nav) MFD of the same year? Climate control is the main function I hope to get back.

You should be able to, but it will have some missing functionality. It is recommended to use the same model # when replacing.

Replacing the MFD will not necessarily fix the dead Nav system problem. You don't make it clear whether the MFD is completely dead or whether it is just the Nav function that is not displayed, but I infer the latter.

If that inference is correct, your problem is somewhere else, like the Nav box, plugs or wiring harness.

If your MFD is completely dead, then the advice from @AnailizeR is good.
