It'll be interesting to see how Prius bashers can mangle these numbers:

<blockquote>"Total [Toyota] car sales jumped 19.4 percent to 140,009, while truck sales edged up 2.7 percent to 102,666.

Toyota sold 19,156 Prius hybrid cars in March, compared with 7,922 a year earlier. The car maker's popular Corolla and Camry sedans were top-selling models, as well. Corolla sales rose 6.3 percent to 34,355, while Camry sales increased 8.4 percent to 42,254."

Yes, the 19,156 sales will definitely stir the pot. Spin is inevitable.

Their claims were weak last month, with the 12,227 sales achieving the top-20.

This month's results makes it darn near impossible to deny the success... though, they'll certainly try.

Wow! So, the Prius sold at over half the rate of the Corolla and nearly half the rate of the Camry? That's really astonishing, given how popular those cars (the Camry and Corolla) are. I knew that the numbers were good for the Prius, but I didn't know they were that good!

But hybrids are going out of style! I read it on The Internet!

    Those numbers are truly impressive.
Here is a story with more detail on my local CBS station.
    http://wcco.com/business/finance_story_093150156.html

And here is the AP story with more numbers:

    http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/04/03/...in2643930.shtml
"In all, Toyota Motor Corp. sold 242,675 light vehicles in the United States, including 140,009 cars, up 19.4 percent from the same month a year ago, and 102,666 trucks, a 2.7 percent increase. So far this year, Toyota has sold 61,635 hybrids in the United States, up 68 percent from the first three months of last year. That includes 28,453 hybrids last month."

More than 10% of all Toyota vehicle sales were hybrids last month. It is nice to see that hybrids sell so well when they are finally produced in larger volumes.

I read the AP story and was disappointed that it didn't report days in inventory. And now for my impressions:

The Volt will turn things around for GM! Toyota's truck sales are only 100,000. That's not enough to keep the plant busy. Every 1% of market share gained by Toyota causes American workers to starve.

Can you guess who it is? B)

All I have to say is dddaammmnnn! Nearly 20K Pri in March. If they maintained that pace it would be 240K in a 12 month period. Who's the niche car now? :D I wonder how our economy handle all those $325K Priuses that last 1 year?
