    So . . . . . . .

My wife and I were out of town for two three weeks celebrating out 1 year anniversary.

I get back and notice that when I turn on the prius the maintenance light flashes, then stops as soon as the car flips over to "combustion engine mode".

Does anyone have an idea as to what's going on here? I know I may have to take it to the dealer, but I hate doing that with no information and basically saying, "Here's my car, I don't know what's wrong, take all my money already".

Battery is working fine, oil was changed about 3K miles ago.

    Hhhmmmmmmmm . . . . .[/size]

I see by another post that you bought this Prius used. The "Maintenance Required Light" goes on briefly starting about 2500 miles from the last reset (as a reminder to change the oil) and will stay on longer the closer to 3,000 miles (then it's constant). If your oil was changed about 3,000 miles ago the timing sounds right.

If you take your Prius to the dealer for the oil change they will reset it for you. If you're doing your own oil changing your own oil here's the procedure
    1. Make sure your odometer is in normal miles, not either of the Trip miles.
    2. Press the Power Switch twice to select the "Ig-On" mode. (without stepping on the brake) while holding down the trip meter reset button. Hold for at least 5 seconds.
    3. The odometer will indicate "oooooo". The light will now be reset.
That's in your manual, if you got one with the Prius. A good source of info is at http://john1701a.com/

Actually it goes on exactly 4500 miles after the last reset, flashes briefly and then goes off. At 5000 miles after the last reset it'll stay on continuously reminding you to get your dang service done!!

It's just a reminder for your every 5000 mile oil change and service.

I went and checked our log and the oil was changed apprx. 3150 miles ago.

What stumps me is that the maintenance light will flash as long as the car is in EV mode (2,3 minutes) then as soon as the engine kicks in the light stops, never to flash again until I turn the car on once more and the cycle repeats.

I'm lost on this one. I don't really want to reset the maint. req. light for fear that I'm missing a larger issue.

Right, sorry, my bad about the 3,000. It's 5,000 as efusco said. Mine just came on for the 40K.

Maybe the last time the oil was changed (ie before the 3150 miles), it wasn't reset.

The maintenance light ONLY comes on based upon mileage from last reset as a reminder for your oil changes and such. It is not a check-engine light or a warning light or a problem indicator. It's only job is to remind you to have maintenance done.

It is only coincidental for the timing of when it goes off. In a few hundred more miles it will come on constant until you have your maintenance done.

Before I got my Prius, I rented one for two weeks in January '05. The light was constant when I got the car and was told not to worry about it.

I agree that maybe last time the oil was changed it was not reset, that happenned to us dealer did not reset the maint req. light so it came on at a different mileage actually came on after the oil change because we had it done earlier than the first change.
