A fellow Prius owner told me that he keeps his fuel tank at 3/4 full to be lighter and therefore gets maximum fuel economy. Thoughts?

Due respects, but this "fellow Prius owner" suffers from MPG OCD.

The fuel saved by not carrying another 12lbs of fuel…

I mean it’s not nothing, but yeah….very OCD disorder.

Filling it full and running it down as low as you safely can will use less fuel overall, due to fewer trips to refill.

One gallon of water weighs 8.34lbs. A turd gen gas tank holds 11.9 gallons so 1/4 tank less is saving your friend 25lbs of weight.

An extra 100lbs of weight in a typical vehicle will reduce fuel efficiency by 2%.

I will let you draw your own conclusion with those facts.

Something lost in translation? Maybe he fills to 3/4 full, roughly, then lets it drop, refills when it's getting low?

Without wipers, I get an extra 1mpg to the tank. 10 more miles that I can drive (y)

I was thinking the friend refuels before or after each drive to keep it at 3/4 tank compulsively, I mean constantly.

fuel is 6 lbs per gal. so about 18 lbs. less at 3/4 tank. Don't take out the back seat, spare, rear wiper, be afraid to run the butt warmer or a/c either. It's a hybrid that already gets better mpg than just about anything else out there regardless. ;)

I'm constantly toting a jump pack that's nearly 20 pounds.

    20 pounds .

The LiON jump pack I have maybe weighs 3 pounds;).

Christmas is just around the corner for an upgrade and hand-me-down of your current one:).

Think you’ll even get an mpg benefit from the potential gift, so a win-win(y).

All the above, or you could lose 18 pounds of body weight to save fuel.

    Depends on the "typical" use.
Extra energy will be needed to GET that extra mass moving......but almost no extra will be needed to KEEP it moving.

Even with a lot of stop and go, your 2% seems a bit high. Where did that figure come from ?

One thing I will say...is that when I remove the rear seats on the Prius v (wagon), the MPGs do noticeably go up. So yeah....obviously a weight decrease will improve MPGs ( it's physics! ). (y)

However, like others have said, you have to have extreme MPG OCD to think a couple gallons of fuel will improve MPGs much. However, *technically*, it will improve a bit.

Our 17" rims weigh in at 24 lbs apiece IIRC. Unsprung weight? That'll get the engineers out of the woodwork.

Well actuality, think it's 18 pounds. Still, I like it, suspect it has more "legs" than the new fangled ones. I've never used it for our Prius, it's for all and sundry, so maybe heavy/old-school is better? It's the Clore JNC660.
