I have been admiring a Chevy Volt in the parking lot of the organization where I work, and thought that I would spend some time investigating that platform.

My initial sense is that there are lots of issues (over 30% of the members report an unscheduled service in a poll). Also, lots of transmission, motor and inverter failures.

Quite a few wistful comparison to Toyota and the Prius. :)

Over 25 "sticky" posts on the general forum, all relating to recalls and TSBs.

    Only 2nd gen volts,

First gen are bulletproof. Rated in the top 5 % of cars.

GMs Mexican made components in 2016 and early 2017 have the most recall issues.

Hence why I waited several years before I got a Volt. I had no desire to beta test for GM,
2nd Gen Volt is GMs first attempt at a variety of technologies they've ignored like an akinized motor,
So never buy the first years worth.

That said the 2016 Volt still is at average or above average reliability compared to other cars.
Given the bar is set so low by turds like the Ford Focus, Dodge Ram, even Highlander at 60ish percent with a few major complaints it's not hard to be at or above average.

I'm sorry but this just isn't right. The first generation Chevrolet Volt is one of the most reliable cars on the road. It doesn't have rattles, oil consumption problems, and head gasket failures like 2010+ Prii. I LOVE all of the 4 Prii that I've ever had and I love the one I have now, but that just isn't right.

I give a round of applause to Chevy for over engineering that vehicle. The whole company was basically riding on its success and quality at the time.

I would own one if it got better gas only fuel economy and didn't take premium. I drive too much to make it worth it at this point in my life.

I am just reporting on what I am seeing on the forum. It's anecdotal, at best. But the number of TSBs and recalls posted as "sticky" on the General Discussion forum is clearly verifiable. See for yourself. http://gm-volt.com/

I actually am a member over there. Sure maybe the second generation has a fair deal of problems, sure! But you should say you're talking about the second generation.

In your original post you're lumping all Chevy volts into one. I will be honest, I don't have any experience with the second generation other than driving one once. When I'm on the Volt forum I'm lurking in the first generation forum.

No, making that leap is unsupported.
It IS the first model year of a car.
There is a reason many people stay away the first model year of a car.
That said, they may be junk, just saying this doesn't necessarily mean that.

i can't open the link, but if there were a lot of stickies on prime issues, after the pip being virtually bulletproof, i would call it junk.

Depending upon how many issues there were, I might agree with you.
However, if there were lots of issues with the second gen Prius the first year, I wouldn't be so quick to label it junk.

maybe the term 'junk' is what is bothering you. that doesn't mean they can't improve it, but it does make one wonder if they did a lot of cost cutting to get the number they wanted.
