A 'meat hunter,' I drove 50 miles (80 km) to the nearest rifle shooting range in my BMW i3-REx. Just within the 106 mi EV range, the route is 30 miles (50 km) of divided highway and 20 miles (30 km) of rural cut-back State roads. It was a rolling, twisty, close to nature route on a rare warm winter day, 65 F (19 C) loaded with three dogs, targets, and rifle.

No one was at the range so I let the dogs run around while I put up the targets.

The dogs were having a ball and as I returned to the firing line, they followed me and I put the lap dogs in the car. But the beagle, Lucy, lagged and decided to go "walkies" and disappeared in the woods.

About two hours later, shooting was done and Lucy who hates loud noises, was still missing.

"Fine dog, I'll be back at sunset when you'll want dinner," and drove home.

About an hour before sunset, the BMW was only charged to 90 miles (144 km) but my Model 3 was at 170 miles (270 km.) So Full Self Driving (FSD) drove the car to the range while I enjoyed the trip. Sad to say, there were two shooters burning up ammunition and I knew Lucy would not come close.

To wait out sunset, I drove 6 miles (10 km) to a gas station for unsweetened tea and a bathroom break. Only to discover they had a Tesla wall charger on the side of the building. I reclined the seat and napped waiting for dark.

Returning, no one was at the range so I called "Lucy, HERE DOG!" but she didn't come. After an hour including looking at the excellent camera night vision (under 'Service',) I resolved to return about midnight and FSD drove me home. Then a call came in as I was waking from a nap.

Sure enough, Lucy was found by a kind hearted woman and taken to their home. We soon determined the best course was for me to drive out that night to pick Lucy up ... another 100 miles (160 km) on a dark and twisty road but once again, FSD was brilliant.

FSD cut curves and braked for sharp one like any frisky car driver. Night had no terrors as the cameras clearly showed the way. I throughly enjoyed the "E ticket" night ride.

Everyone, especially Lucy, was happy to see me. So I gave her savior $20 which she tried to deny. But I told her, "Just give it to your Minister and ask him to bless Lucy."

At home, the BMW is fully charged and the weather turned freezing. This frosty winter night, everyone is safe and warm. In one day, a total of 300 EV miles (480 km) with 1/3 BMW and 2/3d FSD. A perfect end to the day before my 75th birthday.

Might I suggest a four-pak of Air tags and some pooch collar attachments?

Glad your 'range days' worked out.

Air tags don't help unless there is an online ios device within bluetooth range.

    'Defense in depth.'
100 feet might be good enough for a Beagle at a gun range.
I have used them more than once on my beautiful 5 acres of paradise - and YES......100' is 100'.

Plus you can put it in 'lost mode' and crowd source your efforts.
People with IOS devices are 'probably' overrepresented by multiple pet owners, even if they are underrepresented by folks at a gun range.

At $19 (on sale) plus the cost of a fob - the tag remains cost effective for what it does.
