Those all use different 220 v plugs, be sure your receptacle matches it.

And they cost less, too, I'm told. I toy with the idea of getting a Leaf cable to have at home full time so I only have to drag the cable out of the car at work. Maybe after I've saved enough gas money to pay for it.

 

if you're going to make the investment, might be worth looking at L2 cost difference, unless you don't have access to 240v.

 

Good point. If I had the money available now, I'd be all over this one.

The other sad part for me is that my panel is full, so no room to add another 240V breaker.

OEM EVSE are way too expensive even used. ~$200. Might as well buy a new L2 EVSE.

 

if you can wrangle two 120v outlets from different legs, you can make your own 240v.

The only reason to use it would be if you are not allowed to modify anything because you are renting.

 

Take the washer / dryer CB OUT and replace it with a 50 Amp. Tap 240 volts off the dryer. Also

It's not just a cord. Description, pictures, and all the Q&A make it pretty clear to me that it's a charger. As for upsizing the breaker, I'd most likely also have to upsize the wires. They are probably sized for the 30A breaker that's in there now. In fact, I already found one outlet in the garage that was 20A with a 20A breaker and fed by #14 wire. I fixed that immediately. It's moot to me anyway since I don't have the spare money for it now. What I really should do is replace the whole antique service panel with a Square D. (I'm an electrician, by the way. )

Well, I still have a lot to learn about Prii, especially my "new" PiP. But I can find my way around the breaker panel fairly well.

Just a comment for anyone thinking about putting in a bigger breaker to handle a charger, please be careful that your wires are heavy enough. A 20 A breaker requires #12 wire or larger. Most homes' 15 A breakers only have #14 wire. Putting a 20 A breaker on that circuit is a code violation and a fire hazard. Wire sizes are the same for 20 A whether it's 110V or 220V. For 30 A, use #10. I make it a practice to never use #14. That way, if I ever need to go from a 15 to a 20 A breaker, I don't have to replace the wires. A trick I learned in the factory because engineers tend to use the smallest motors possible and then we'd eventually have to put in a bigger one.

If you have ANY doubt, have a pro do it. It's way cheaper than a fire.

 

I want to repeat this! Even your dryer only runs for 50 minutes, usually while you are awake. Your car is going to charge for 5 hours at 110v, or 2.5 hours at 220v, often while you sleep. The risk of failure is significant. Lets not be in the news.

 

I paid $175 for a Leaf charger on eBay.
