Can someone tell me when Toyota placed the 12 V battery in the Gen 2 plug in? In Gen 1 it's in rear hatch area hidden below various trim pieces and difficult not impossible to removed due to it sitting low within the recess below hatch floor level against side inside wall of car., thank you.

when, or where? gen 2 plug in (aka prime) has the battery under the hood, same as gen 4 prius.
idk when they did it, but it was when they started making the gen 4 and prime. (aka gen 2 plug in)

they couldn't fit it under the hood. in the gen 4, they shrunk the inverter substantially, allowing space for the 12v.

    gen 1 prius = sedan.

gen 2 prius = hatch back.

gen 3 prius = hatch back, but along comes c and v, then plug in. very confusing.

gen 4 prius = hatch back, and prime. some are calling gen 3 plug in gen 1, and prime gen 2.

    now i'm confusing myself.o_O

I think it went off the rails when the Prime was equated to "gen 2". How about "gen 4 plug-in"?

Shopping for a new Prius now and I am a little confused. by this thread.

Is this the battery equivalent to the the 12 V battery in my Gen 2 that is under the luggage compartment?

Yes. The 12V battery had been under the rear deck, but that changed in 2016 with the Gen 4 because they finally made room for it where most cars locate their 12V battery -- under the hood.
