I bought a 2005 Prius with 152000 miles last month. The hybrid battery had been replaced in 2019 with an aftermarket refurbished one. Today all the lights on the dash came on. The dealer says it's the hybrid battery. They also said Toyota just announced they are giving a lifetime warranty if I get a new battery from them for around $3100 plus tax. Anyone else heard this re the warranty?

For the original purchaser only. Sounds like a good deal if you plan to keep the car forever, before it dies from rust or engine failure.

They obviously have data suggesting very few people make it past their first HV battery replacement and needing a 2nd. So this lifetime warranty is just an additional piece of paper given as a sales tool.

Yes you're paying $3,000 to get a warranty I'm not going to do that I'll just get it for the 1600 have it for the 8 to 10 and be done with it that's generally what they last anyway look at all these cars there have been a few that you see where they've been replaced really early on but probably didn't need it it was a misdiagnosis or what have you now we know that this has happened quite a bit in the early stages of the car but most of them went to 8 to 10 unless they were just seriously abused or you know people left water in the vehicles and all of the things that you shouldn't be doing but then those people don't really count.

While that looks impressive at first... This is just an extended warranty offer that is designed for dealership profits, so there's lots of additional fees and loopholes. In doing a dealerlifetime.com google search I found this:

"A lifetime powertrain warranty can help save you thousands of dollars in repair costs. However, some say that the true value that a lifetime warranty offers holds is not beneficial to the buyer, but rather the dealer and the dealer's marketing team. For example, some lifetime warranties may not cover important parts, such as the seals or gaskets. When a dealership offers a third party warranty, you may not have a warranty if the third party goes out of business or the dealership ownership changes."

And because a brand new OEM hybrid battery is going to be good for 10 or 15 years, do you really think you'll still have the car and the warranty provider after that much time?

Yeah whose lifetime what lifetime the expected lifetime of the said vehicle which according to the manufacturer will be a lot less than you think they want you buying a car every five they've almost got the Gen X people believe in this again yeah you need a new car every 3 to 5 years no matter what just because we said so and they're buying it I'm glad for them because well they don't know any better. I'm not buying anything anytime anybody tells me to you can believe that I've never had a car loan in my life and I'm not going to start anytime in the near future I can assure you with that.

If it is backed by the Toyota distributor directly and not a LLC it might be a good deal for early gen4 Rav4, Camry or Prius owners who honestly believe they will own the car for another 15 years. So that might be 2015 and newer vehicles which are really clean.

Perhaps only those without oil burning issues.

If your going to keep the car till the wheels fall off - a new traction battery is the way to go. As you can already see, a remanufactured/refurbished battery is a gamble and only lasted 5 years - whereas the OEM lasted 14 years. I think there was a recall/TSB on diodes going bad on top of the transmission inverter. If that happens, they won't cover the replacement of your traction battery pack. The car is almost 20 years old, other things are going to give out. I'd probably shop around and try to find a cheaper fix.

That's just my opinion. Good Luck...
