GO FURTHER, DO MORE WITH THE ALL-NEW LEXUS RX 450h+ PLUG-IN HYBRID ELECTRIC

Lexus Europe has released the RX 450h+ and orders can commence. WLTP range is listed as 69 km (43 miles) and mileage is 1.1L/100km (214mpg). It gets to 100km/h in 6.5 seconds.

Let's compare. The NX 450h+ in Europe gets to 100km/h in 6.3 and the WLTP range is listed as 70 to 74km (44 - 46 miles) combined with fuel consumption at 0.9L - 1.1L/100km (261 - 214mpg) on the combined circuit.

US EPA for the NX 450h+ is 58km (36 miles) range and 6.4L/100km (37mpg) combined. The US EPA differentiates hybrid versus EV (84 MPGe) but not combined full battery plus tank of gas. Europe calculates a full battery with gas which is why you see 200+mpg on their plug-ins. We'll skip the mpg and see if we can calculate range for the US. The WLTP range estimate is generous by about 22% for the NX 450h+ so EPA on the RX 450h+ should be around 33 miles.

The EPA did this for the very first year for the Volt, and quickly realized how useless it was for consumers. People's charging schedules aren't based on everybody driving the same distance between charges. Most do so once a day, regardless of miles driven. That makes the YMMV warning to another level.

Back to the thread topic. Dividing a WLTP rating by 1.12 gets an EPA estimate*. I think it's close to your 22% method, but derived from comparing the ratings of multiple models. For the RX 450+, it returns 38 miles of range. Looks sus compared the NX's EPA, but what are the battery differences?

*from an older article I once posted here; for a NEDC rating divide by 1.41.
