Let's compare Prius MPG to previous car

Our two worst tanks in the Prius are in the 34s. We had a 2007 Nissan Versa that averaged 28mpg but once gave us 36 for a tank when running a stretch of flat Florida highway that was perfectly in the car's "wheelhouse" for speed, lack of traffic stops and traffic, good weather, etc. Before that we had a 1994 Honda Civic that averaged in the low 30s but often delivered individual tanks of over 40mpg on our cross country trips.

Our Prius doesn't win comparing it's worst tanks to the others' best tanks but it wins the overall battle hands down.

 

Best tank with my 99 Corolla wagon was 5.9l/100km or 40MPG. Worst tank I got with it was 10.2l/100km or 23MG.
But while driving the Corolla I thought that if conditions were better I could get something like 5.2l/100km or 45MPG.
Best tank with my Prius is 3.57l/100km or 66MPG. Worst is 5.8l/100km or 41MPG.

So yes Prius wins even when comparing its worst tank to the best of Corolla. But not with a big margin.

 

Worst tank in my Prius so far was 38.9 mpg loaded down with 5 adults, coolers, etc. Best tank ever in my Durango 4x4 was 14.9mpg on a long trip of back roads keeping the speed at 55-60 mph and traveling light

Worst in the Prius was 34MPG driving about 170 miles with a queen sized mattress on top of the car. The boxy aerodynamics made the car extremely sensitive to wind gusts, as well as when trucks passed the car. Flying crappy little airplanes along the ocean helped me deal with unexpected gusts that pushed me around though

My previous vehicle was a Honda Passport, best tank was probably about 26 MPG via means of hypermiling to practice for the Prius.

 

Well, since 2014 I've owned a gen 2, gen 3, and a Prius v wagon. Since this is a gen 2.. I'll go with that. The worst tank my 2005 ever gave me was 40 mpg. That was when we got a ton of ice one year. I let the car idle for 30 mins just to be able to scrape off the ice. And it was freezing cold and I still drove on the ice and snow at very low speeds with the heat cracked up.

My previous car before switching to hybrids, was a 2004 Volvo S80. Inline six cylinder. Slow as a dog on regular or mid grade fuel. Best that sucker ever got was almost 26 mpg.

 

2012 pip: 70 mpg.

2008 prius: 60 mpg.

2004 prius: 55 mpg.

2001 taurus: 22 mpg.

 

2008 Prius Tspirit UK with 16" tyres:

Best ever commute to work (15 miles) = 72.9mpg

Best ever full tank summer = 66mpg

Best ever full tank winter = 58.5mpg

Worst ever full tank winter = 53.5mpg

1998 Mazda MX-3 1.6i 16v:

Worst ever full tank winter = 18.18mpg

Best ever full tank summer = 31.2mpg

The latter was achieved while trying hypermiling techniques read up on PriusChat, while planning to replace the MX-3 Coupe with a Prius Tspirit. Normally, I got no more than 270 miles out of the MX-3's 50 litre tank on long journeys in summer, and usually 240 miles max city driving in summer.

I've just driven home from grocery shopping. I've done 195 miles over the last week, and only one pip gone from the fuel indicator. I know it's not 100% accurate and it'll start dropping quickly soon, but my Prius has done 195 miles this week - and there's still enough fuel in there for commuting another 2 weeks, realistically.

If this was my MX-3, I'd already be staring at an empty tank, and filling it up already.

I can see the fuel savings compared to my old MX-3, and I'm grateful I own a Prius Hybrid
