Not true. There are plenty of plug and play leds and I've used them in several of my vehicles and they are extremely underrated because they seem too simple. Here's some I use.

I'm looking at the LED headlight parts on E-Bay, and they all have clusters of LEDs. The headlight projector beam optics probably require more of a point-source (the bulbs have a small filament), so I would think the LED lights would result in a less-bright, more-diffuse headlight pattern.

Have you noticed this?

 

I've not noticed any difference in strength or projection. They actually work very well and keeps it simple.

How about the "cateye" effect, where there is no light projected directly in front of the projector lens? This appears like a cateye, or more correctly, like the vertical irises (slit) of a cat's eye, showing up as a dark vertical line when looking directly straight on at the projector lens.

This happens due to the side mounted LEDs with a circuit board in the middle, blocking the light from each side, producing a dark area immediately in front of the "bulb".

 

It'll be dark in 15 min I'll go snap some pics

UPDATE!!! Gotta eat my words here, just turned the headlights on and they are now very dim. When I first installed them just 2 days ago they were fine, now they are VERY dim. Don't buy these.

Car in Ready Mode? In Ready Mode, the voltage is about 14.4v, vs 12.x volts off the auxiliary battery when the car is Off.

 

Nope I had the car running and drove down the street. I was shocked because these were bright when I first installed them. My led parking lights are brighter than these. Not sure what happened, tomorrow I'll put my stock bulbs back in. 30 down the drain

Justification to my answer.
OEM LEDs are simply the best LEDs on the market. There is a person on the boards who retrofitted the corollas LEDs on his Prius and still said they weren't as bright as HIDs, but are better than the stock halogens.

All the LEDs kits I've seen just aren't up to par with with a retrofit LED.

It's simple. Get an HID kit and install that. Even you want install the relay harness too.

When you actually change out then projector itself. It's a bit of a process. Removal of the headlight from the car, putting it in an oven(literally) and opening the headlight to changed everything out. Depending on the application it may require cutting and trimming on the projector and/or housing itself.
I have done an H1 retrofit. I used h1 projectors in my car rather than the standard H11.....or H9...I forgot. Hahaha.

Simply put: no

There are plenty of aftermarket LEDs on the market but they're all gimmicks and I feel for the poor saps who buy them with high hopes. The Prius' projector headlights (like all projector lights) require a properly focused point source of light shining in just the right way. None of these aftermarket products will have a useful beam pattern for nighttime driving.

 

Correct me if I am wrong but don't they make h11 halogen bulbs with more output?

If so does anyone know of a replacement from a notable company... like philips Sylvania or ....?

I just realized I could get a ticket for anything over 65w/55w high/low beam. Is that true?

If so then we can upgrade from the standard 35w to 65w. I just hope the wires don't over heat

 

That was me. The Corolla LEDs are as bright, but aren't quite as wide as most OEM HID beams, but have better distance lighting.

Something to keep in mind: if Toyota could just drop in LED bulbs in halogen housings for a few bucks, would they spend the extra money on proprietary (expensive) LED headlights for the Corolla, Prius, etc.?
