I was think of picking up some LED bulbs from eBay for my headlights. They're cheap, just 10 bucks for the pair. Is it safe to use? Does anyone have experience with these?
No, they are not ok. They will be far too dim, and more than likely, the individual LEDs will start to fail soon after installation. Save your money, even if they are cheap. SCH-I535
Not by a long shot. They're $10 for a reason (very dim, crappy build quality). If you want something a little higher tech than standard halogen headlights, I'd go with a HID upgrade kit like this one: http://www.xenonsupply.com/toyota-prius-hid-xenon-package.html
I've been thinking of those even though they're a bit pricy. Are they street legal? My biggest concern with hid was getting a ticket
Yes they're legal and from what I hear it's well worth the money. The Prius already has the correct type of projector lenses for such a conversion. They'll direct the light down on to the road correctly. It wouldn't be legal to install these on a vehicle without the projector lenses (it's that big round glass globe thing in the headlight housing) because they'd scatter the light out in all directions. A bunch of guys here have done this conversion. Search around the forums and you'll find a bunch more info on it. I haven't done it myself, though. (I got the factory LED headlights).
I got the package for these cheap LED replacements (have not put in head) but hae done some of interior .. i'm sure much less power draw .. is for certain brighter .. drawback .. 'space-white' brightness .. not the nice incandescent warm glow .. so harsher on the eyes .. just like driving these nights ... bright white LED's in your rear view and from oncoming ... harsher on the eyes ...
