Since the main compartment under the central console is completely dark during the night and not even the reading lights can help, and since Toyota has thought that adding 2 LEDs for the footwell illumination was absolutely necessary, while instead digging with your hand in the compartment underneath the console guessing where your stuff is, while driving, is perfectly OK, I took matters in my hands and found a neat lighting solution, see pics for details. What do you think?
You can find more detail about the OSRAM DOT-it LED Light solution I used here.
I used the velcro solution to attach it (included from OSRAM), so that I can also use the light elsewhere in the car if necessary. ;)
Where I put the LED light was the only section of plastic flat enough to keep the light stay put - everywhere else the plastic is too rounded and you do need a flat surface to put the DOT-it.

The fabric is holding the the light ok? I've tried this in other cars and it wouldn't hold

Don't use the velcro which has the fabric... Use the kind that 'interlocks' like the tabs which come with the EZ Pass (If you've got an EZ Pass you know what I'm talking about - Since your from NJ you may have one)... Once you snap the two peices together they won't come apart unless pulled apart.

    Great solution!

I used a similar but smaller LED light, a "Mighty Bright Mini Tap Light," mounted to the ceiling overhanging the console. It's easily accessible and tapped on when needed. The ceiling surface is a bit curved but the light has a smaller surface area so I was able to securely affixed it with double stick tape.

Better than being in the dark.

    I want candy!

You can also mount an LED *under* the bridge. The plastic that covers the top (around shifter etc) just pops off - then there is plenty of access to run wires, or drill a small hole...

It is not the two pieces of Velcro that won't hold together. It is the adhesive the Velcro sticks to the plastic panel, it will come off in few days, faster if the weather is hot.

It's all still sticking pretty good - I will post here when it will fall down. So far so good.

Not all adhesives are made the same. The adhesive on the back of the velcro I am talking about held and is holding well for me where I have placed it on plastic interior trim, for 3 years now. The surface must also be properly prepped before sticking it on.
