Lack of Heated Side Mirrors in 1,2, and 3

If I could I would rip them off my car and sell them to you, I would. It's a complete waste of money in sunny California. I am irritated Toyota forced me to pay for it in my trim level, along with the useless heated seats.

All joking aside, heated mirrors should be an easy modification.

 

if you have to park in sticky sleet/snow a lot, they come in handy. i never use mine.

 

I don't have a heated mirrors and I'm thinking about buying them. Can I just buy mirror glasses with heating (8796152E00/8793152E20)? Is it possible that there won't be wires to plug them to and I need to replace the whole mirror assembly?

 

That is possible, but you can just check your wiring diagram manual at techinfo.toyota.com ($15 for two days gives you plenty of time to look around and download whatever you think you might use) and see what you've got. For instance, my Gen 1 has no heated mirrors, but I happened to see in the diagram there is already a circuit for them in my fusebox ... the diagram shows which empty fuse slot it is, and which pin of the connector at the back of the fusebox it comes out on. I would only have to get the right terminal at the dealer, crimp it to some wire and click it into the harness connector, and lay the wire to the doors and up into the mirrors.

Whether your situation would be the same, or maybe better (the wire to the doors/mirrors could be present already), or maybe worse (circuit missing in the fuse box?), you would easily find out by looking in your own diagram.

Canadian models, even base, come with heated mirrors. I guess that's why we call Canada the great white north!

 

I've taken out a c2 nonheated mirror and a c4 heated mirror, and only difference is that the c4's mirror has the heating element stickered to the back of the mirror while the c2 just had regular mirror w/o any heating element sticker

So you could probably easily find a aftermarket (heck with just a search of "prius c heated mirror" on ebay already found 1 & it also comes with turn arrows), and since the glass can be easily replaced/interchanged w/o dissembling the whole mirror assembly, the HARDEST and most time consuming part would be to run the wiring and finding power...and according to the owner's manual the DEF (mirror heater, rear window defogger, so that it turns on with the use of the rear defogger button) fuse, is sadly located in the engine fuse compartment and not in the driver's fusebox.

 

Honestly, I don't know. I've read a DIY for installing LED blinkers on the mirrors and it was plug and play as Japanese models have that option already. Whether non heated side mirror Prius are prewired, I don't know. What I do know is I've run speaker wires to that location for tweeters before and it was not a difficult thing to do because you can just add the new wire to what is already there.

 

I know this is an older thread but I live 1000 miles further than most Canadians and my C2 doesn't have heated mirrors and I really need to install them. Last winter wasn't so bad but this winter has been rough. We haven't been above freezing for 6 weeks and I park outside. We won't be above freezing until late march probably. When you scrape the mirror it does virtually nothing at -20F but mess up the alignment of it . Honestly carrying deicer in a spray bottle is only half effective and It's dangerous to drive with them iced over from freezing fog.

Has anybody successfully installed them on a non originally equipped car yet?

 

When I checked last year, ironically, no one in Maine has and sells package fours

but those heated side mirrors would have been so handy to get rid of all of the fog and sometimes ice...

 

I've only had two vehicles with heated mirrors but ironically enough they take a long time to defrost. I'd rather have heated seats available on lower trims and maybe alloy wheels?

 

Heated seats and alloy wheels don't effect safety though. A cold butt for a few minutes and alloy wheels is further down the list than not being able to use your mirrors here in Alaska.

 

Bumping this old thread as I'm hoping to tackle this upgrade in my '15 c2. Was there ever a definitive answer on whether the wiring is already in place so that the only thing needed is the mirrors with the heating element affixed?

 

I didn't study that when I had my doors apart last month, but from a photo I took it looks like there are only 5 wires on the captive harness from the mirror assembly. I can't tell how many there are on the door-side of that connector block, but there is clearly space for more than 5 wires.

So I think I'm seeing:

position x
position y
position ground
turn indicator hot
turn indicator ground

But that's just a guess, since I haven't bothered to rent the wiring diagram either. @ChapmanF has the right idea in post #8 above.

The cars I've had with heated mirrors taught me that the feature is great for preventing build-up while driving in terrible conditions. Not very useful for removing whatever grew there overnight. I work harder to avoid terrible conditions now.

 

Thx for the intel, @Leadfoot J. McCoalroller. Checking out the image below from an OE heated side mirror assembly up for auction on eBay here, it looks like there are six (6) positions utilized on connector. Perhaps the the sixth is for the heating?

 

Makes sense, would only need one hot and could use the same ground as the position motors.

 

Has anyone seen the vehicle harness side and if that 6th wire is present on the lower trims? If so, then it might be as simple as plugging in a heated mirror or adding the element and wire. I read online either a Rav4 or 4Runner user said the wires were there they simply installed the new mirrors and it worked. A service manual would confirm the wire. There are also other add-on kits as seen below. I might pick up a Prius C so this caught my interest.
