If you commute 5 miles round trip to work everyday and plug in, shouldn't your mpg be infinite. If you drive across america and are unable to plug in consistently, your mpg will be just like a regular hybrid(less the efficiency loss due to the battery weight).

If you drive 5 miles round trip, your mpg is not going to be very good even with a plugin. The engine still has to warm up, twice in your case. And you know how that does right now without the plug.

I'm guessing with a plug in there would be an actual EV switch in the car, similar to what is in the prius cars in other than US countries. So warming the engine might not be necessary, if the engine is not used. Not to mention wouldn't surprise me that there be some changing of software to be more reliant on the EV motor, perhaps not being so damn touchy when you hit the gas pedal to switching over to the ICE.
