I know nothing about electricity, so I am very ignorant. I have a 240 line in my garage that isn't being used. I would like to have a 240 cable that I can use in the garage so I can keep the 120 in the car. Would this work? J1772 Cable and connector EVSE side | eBay I assume I would need to add something to it. Thanks
You would need the entire EVSE charging circuitry component. This is essentially just the J1772 head with some cabling attached. Something like that could be used to build your own, but it's not really for anyone that doesn't know what they're doing: open-evse - Open Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) - Google Project Hosting
Ah, yes it seems I was WAY over simplifying my thinking. So say I already have a 240 line into my garage. Is all I need one of those lvl 2 chargers that are sold at Home Depot or Lowes? Then plug that into the 240 line and I am good to charge with it? I am renting a house that has a 240 line and am hoping I can buy a lvl 2 station for use there, and I can take it with me when I move.
The the garage have a 240v outlet (like for a dryer)? Then you might want to get a 240v portable unit. I don't think they sell those at homedepot. The lowes/homedeopt units need to be installed directly wired in. If you ahve a 240v plug, you want something like evseupgrade.com or SPX Service Solutions - SPX EV Solutions: Product Information
I was thinking about the same thing until I found out that the so called lvl 2 stations are just a glorified cable with the J1772 attached to it. And they want over $700 for it! So I decided to upgrade my original cable to 240/120 smart switchable by EVSE Upgrade. Now I am happy to charge with 240 in my garage and 120 anywhere else when I needed to. The only thing is I have to put the cable back into my car when charging is completed.
