Know how to make the doors lock automatically when put in Drive?

For safety reasons I am looking to make my Prius doors lock automatically when the car is put in Drive or when the car goes past 8mph. My other cars all do this automatically - even my little smart does it.

It's something to help prevent carjacking that I thought was pretty much standard nowadays.

Anyone know how to program this into the Prius?

    I hope so :)

Not programmable, but here is an add-on mod to do it.

Thanks, I am ordering it right now. Do you know where to purchase that "thingy" that goes on the front of the Prius to show you where the front is? It like attaches to the front near the license plate, I saw it one time on a Prius.

Looks like the answer to the "problem" but is it worth $65.00. I have had cars that lock automatically and with the Prius I am in the habit of pushing the power lock button as I am shifting into "gear". Lots cheaper!

My last car had an autolock, and so I'm habituated to not locking the car, and I so I don't remember to now.

The RS3200 alarm upgrade does it, too (I'm pretty sure), but that's a lot more money. I'm on the fence about this Coastal mod. Whenever they come out with the Lockpick (basic) for the '06, I'll get it immediately and maybe add on the autolock, but I'm not sure. As you ask, is it worth $65?

Standard? Besides the Smart car, are they GM cars? A # of GM cars (annoyingly do this).

None of these recent cars have this feature you ask for: my 04 350Z, former 02 Nissan Maxima, my dad's 02 Toyota RAV4.

One more data point, some aftermarket alarms have a feature you can enable to auto-lock when you shift into drive and auto-unlock when you shift into park. I've only had Clifford alarms and tried this feature for awhile but then turned off both behaviors.

The Coastal door lock modification works as advertised. Works for me. Whether it is worth the money to you can only be answered by you. My wife enjoys that the Prius now automatically lock the doors.

But our 02 Camry has auto-lock (user customisable, not dealer) so does the Solara, Corolla and Matrix.

Interesting. I'll have to RTFM of my dad's RAV4 to check if I have some time.

    On a humorous note, there's this http://www.engrish.com/detail.php?imagenam...date=2001-01-29. ;)

where are the instructions or schematic for the coastal mod? I'd like to read 'em and see if it looks like something I could do before I order....

No info on the Coastal mod but here's another option:

    Prius Auto Lock

I know that one Prius owner got a cheap ($12) cell phone car antenna and attached it to the front license plate bracket. You can just see the tip of the antenna over the hood. If you add an antenna ball, it's even easier to see. If anyone asks what it is you can say it draws electricity out of the air. :p

Interestingly, the auto-lock Coastal sold for the pre-2004 Prius had it lock when the driver's seatbelt was fastened and unlock when the belt was unfastened.

Heck, my '99 Solara had it, too.

If you want to talk cheaper. It would have been cheaper for you to buy a moped instead of a Prius.

That's an extremely silly response. If something isn't worth the money, it isn't worth the money. If you NEED a device like this (e.g., you have young children) it would probably be worth it, but otherwise there isn't much call to spend $65 just to lock the doors.
