Alabama's traditional high humidity, hot summer weather arrived this week. Based on earlier experience with the 2003 Prius, I only used the A/C when it got especially close. But I needed to run an errand at 2PM and I knew the car and drive would be insufferable. So I finally hit the "A/C" button on the keyfob while getting dressed.

I was pleasantly surprised that the cabin was nice when I got to the car, the lowest trim "Plus." Then this evening while standing by the car, I hit the button and was happy to watch the car A/C come on and the EVSE light up to sustain the charge.

Now our BMW i3-REx has something similar via the cell-network based car connection. I had a strange problem where the App reported it could not send the A/C enable only to find when I got to the car, it was on.

Regardless, having the keyfob "A/C" work is an important feature in a hot climate and I expect to use it more often in the future.

    Nice, same with PiP.
Just remember that the degree of cooling depends on the temp setting when last driven. If you go into a restaurant leaving the car parked exposed to the sun, lowering the temp setting before shut-off will enhance cooling effect of the remote A/C operation afterwords.

How far away will the fob work? i thought it worked only in close proximity.

With the PiP and FOB battery in good conditions I managed to operate it even 70-80 yards away (with eyesight).

Is "A/C" the Japanese definition, i.e. climate control? So I can start warming my car with a press of the key fob in the winter?

Yes, but since you have the Advanced you can use Entune App and not have to worry about what setting you left your car in. The app lets you choose various things like Flame Thrower heat or Front Defrost and/or Rear Defrost, along with just Snow blizzard cold... if you want.

contrary to popular belief A/C (air conditioning) does not simply mean "to cool" hence the word "conditioning"

I never found the function useful since the car is garaged. Range and line of sight in a parking lot is so short that by the time I walk up to the car, it's hardly more cool than if I rolled all the windows down a for starting the car.

While I'm not a big A/C user, and probably won't use the pre-AC myself, I can certainly understand the need for it in hot, humid climates. Glad to know it works well, should the need arise.

Yeah, I'm aware of the Entune App. Even tried it once, without success. But I've read that the pre-conditioning through the app works only where you have 'sufficient' (whatever that means) charge in your battery. And since I can't charge at home, that will rarely be the case. I thought maybe the fob isn't quite so fussy as to when it will work.

The term "air conditioning" pretty much universally means "cooling" to North Americans, and always has, regardless of the literal meaning of the words. If one were to tell someone in the middle of a Minnesota winter that you were turning on the air conditioner, you would get a real funny look.

Technically true, though at this point it's come to mean cool. After all, in a lot of the world (Asia), everyone just says "aircon" (= cool)

English is quite a language. After all, if you think about it, people are "head over heels" for everyone -- because unless you're upside down on your hands, your head will always be over your heels...

Probably because when Carrier invented the air conditioner to cool, people weren't using air conditioners to heat

  20. Admittedly, while I was reading about the A/C button on the key, I wanted to get clarification about how I know if the defroster will "just know" to kick on in the morning (will it sense it? Or do I need to pre-set the defroster the night before so that when I press the A/C/ button it turns on the defroster and not just the air conditioner?).

Then I searched online and found your post... I was totally not even aware that I could do that through an app. (Also I admit to not using a smart phone, for years I've stuck with an iPod Touch and free WiFi cause I gotta save money somewhere.) So, I figured, well let me enter in my TSC contract ID, and see what happens.

Well, what do we have here? :D
