This weekend I stopped my car, put it in park and turned it off (or so I thought). I was in a hurry so I didn't really look at the dash, I just left. When I returned to my car a few minutes later, it was still on. The dash was all lit up, the running lights were on, the stereo was searching for my phone, etc.

I put the key back in, turned it on and turned it to off position and the car shut off.

Any ideas why? I'm going to speak to the mechanic when I take it in for an oil change next week, but it's a little worrisome.

The Three has the smart key system, and the mechanical key never leaves its slot in the fob. All you need to start the car is to have the fob anywhere in the vehicle.

If you turn the key off before you have it in Park, it will still be on. You may have still had it in Drive when you turned the key to off . This happened to me before.

It won't let you take the key out if it's still in Drive.

if a person yanks a key out by the lanyard/keyring to spin the lock cylinder just right and catch it open, itz possible. things can get caught inside especially with spring loaded pins with gooey debris on the key faces. i instruct my kids to take their time, dont exceed mechanical limits, allow the mechanisms to respond when opening doors etc.
please notice whether the machine is off. of course i am the one who leaves the water running in the sink,,,

Have the mechanic check the ignition switch to be sure. If you bought the car used make sure it didn't have an automatic start set up that could be crapping out. Just a couple of suggestions
