So I have a weird issue. I just purchased a 2008 Prius and it came with 2 key fobs. The both worked but one of them had the rubber torn around the buttons. I purchased a new key fob case. I transferred everything over to the new fob and now it will not unlock/lock the car nor start the car unless the keyfob is inserted. I did transfer over the chip (hence why it will start when I insert the key). The other fob still works but the new case (with the old internals) does not do any of its functions except start the car when inserted. I have tried turning on and off the Key button under the steering wheel. I am wondering if I had the battery out too long and it needs to be reset to the car or something. I have looked online and gone through the owner's manual and have not found and answer.

    Any advice?

So after I don't know how long, I am thinking I must have damaged the chip inside the fob. I have tried to reprogram the fob to the Prius multiple times. I get through the procedure
and everything works as the video states except the last step where I try to program the new fob. It will never sync up and complete. I have tried multiple batteries. All of them have the red LED light up when I push a button, all I can think is the fob is not transmitting its signal out. Maybe I messed up a connection removing it or shorted it somehow. Unless someone has any guesses from here, I think all I can do is purchase a new FOB. I already have the chip (which works because I can start the car when I insert the FOB.

There are 2 different functions for the fob. The chip is indeed for starting the car and that's quite easy to program. The remote is a different story (experienced myself...). You can't program an existing fob which has already been programmed to a car. Next to that there is a max of 4 fobs you can program to the same car. So when your fob has already been attached to the car this is weird that it lost its connection (battery change will not cause that), so maybe indeed you damaged the internals? A new fob will probably work as long as it's not already has 4 fobs programmed (not likely but possible...), or go to a specialist and have the memory deleted and reprogram the 2 fobs.

    Best regards, Nick

When one of mine suddenly stopped working the only way I could reprogram it was through techstream.
That jiggery pokery method never worked for me either.
If you can get Techstream up and running (lots of threads about it) there are Youtube vids showing you how to program your keys.

I have been reading and the see I cannot do SKS in my own. From what I’ve found online I can even use Techstream to do that because the bootlegged versions won’t have the ability to.

but even without getting the SKS working, shouldn’t I be able to get the lock/unlock working easily?

again my SKS is working great in my other fob.
