I've figured it out! He just doesn't want me to have a Prius!

So as you know we are currently hoping to buy a Prius soon. We already have one (his), a black 2005 package 6. I have an Explorer.

He is trying to talk me into anything BUT a Prius. First I get the "I don't think we should get a new car, I don't think this is the right time, yada yada yada." But then, 2 seconds later, it's "you should get a Camry" or "What about the VW Tiguan?" or "Let's go check out the Honda Civic hybrid!"

I see the light. He just doesn't want me to have a Prius. He just doesn't want me to have a new one while his has 80,000 miles on his. And no, he can't get the new one as he has the carpool lane stickers, which he needs for his long commute. I commute too but mostly on surface streets and a toll road, so I don't need the stickers like he does.

He's not just driving green, he's seeing green!

Here is an alternative interpretation: your DH wants to have a different vehicle (besides Prius) available to drive on weekends.

Your DH is thinking with his pocket book. Good job. The Prius market is great for dealerships yet bad for the consumer. You could buy a cheaper car, not as sweet as a Prius, but financially a better choice. You can still get good gas mileage with an alternative to the prius. When the dealerships stop with the huge markups, then get yourself one.

If you want a Prius, get a Prius. You're the one that has to drive it. If you don't get what you want, you are going to be pissed every time you have to get in the car and drive anywhere for the years and years you own the car. Everytime you get in it, you'll remember how HE wouldn't let you have the car you wanted.

    Tell him that.

You might want to re-evaluate that statement when gas hits $7 in 6 weeks when the current $135 futures contracts execute and oil purchased at that price makes it in and out of refineries. Our current price is based on early April futures contract. Even if the price of oil plummted to $80 a barrel, gasoline will still be $7 in 6 weeks.

Look at the Prius as a hedge. It's not a matter of if gas will hit $10 / gal, but when. At $10 a gallon, 100K miles driven in a prius is $20K. Driven in a car that gets 25 MPG, it's $40K. Compare that to when gas was $1.50. and you have $3K and $6K respectively.

Tell him you are ok with that and you'll get a Lexus hybrid instead :D . He can pay the difference. I have a great dealer for you.

Seriously, I think a two-Prius couple is really cool, but then I am a Californian

    I see no problem. :typing:

This is a piece of cake. Give him a choice:

    1. New Prius :D
    2. Lotus :p
    3. Hummer
    4. Divorce (and the family's Prius goes with you)

    So are we. :D

I don't think it's a weekend car option as we almost always take his car on the weekends - saves gas. That's a convincing point too because then we can now have the option of taking my car.

I just don't he wants me to have a new one while he has an old one! He's still bucking, but we are still getting the 2nd Prius - hopefully today. I'll let him take it to work a few times to show it off (and sit in traffic without his stickers) and he'll come around.... ;)

    ranchogirl,
I bought my prius in December, at ~$3000 below sticker, and my wife wasn't ready to buy a new car then. In May, when gas was closing in on $4, she decided it was time. Now the price here (western IL) was Sticker + $2000 and 16 week waiting list. We shopped around to better than ten dealers with similar results. If we were to buy now (mid June), it's $4-$5000 over and six months. So we studied the other options, including HCH, TCH, regular civic, Corolla, etc... and decided on a yaris sedan. It's EPA numbers are 29 city and 36 hwy. She had to pay $400 under sticker, and she did order it (fully loaded except 5spd). Driving since Memorial day, she has been getting an average of 43mpg. We added a scangauge to help her with hypermiling, but just since the last tank. The car cost ~$15000 and it would take 10 years to make up the difference in fuel from the cost of the Prius, even at $6 gas. She really loves the car, has a 'control thing' (she's always been a manual trans driver) and the car handles really smartly. It has more zip than the prius and handles city traffic manuevers like a go cart. She commutes ~85 miles/day and drives the speed limit (or a little over). I get upper 50s with the prius and spent $27000 on it. She has ordered leather interior(aftermarket) because the cloth seems really cheap, so that adds another $750+install, but she says the car is worth it.
I think you should sit down and analyze the true value of what you want a prius for, and then decide whether you are willing to pay all that green for the 'green' status symbol. The Yaris (as are many subcompacts) is ULEVII, so you would be making a good environmental move, plus you could be stealthy hypermiling. I know in the prius if I do the speed limit, there will always be an SUV rubbing my bumper. In her Yaris, they just pass like it was any other (slow) car. My two cents worth, you'll get my bill at the end of the month.

Check out this web site for info to compare vehicles side to side.

    Fuel Economy

My thoughts are the Prius is an excellent vehicle with a rather low supply and a high demand. Thus, dealerships are charging more for them. So when a person buys at in inflated price it will take a longer time for them to reap benefits. My feelings are that the market will not always be like this for the prius. So why not get a cheaper vehicle say a Honda Civic which still gets good mileage and then wait for the market to change. Here is a comparison:

2008 Toyota Prius Cost $25,000 (if you are lucky right now)
    2008 Honda Civic Cost $15,000
Cost to operate @ $7.00 bucks a gallon

    Prius Civic
    25 miles $3.80 $6.03

Annual fuel cost based on 15,000 miles with 45% highway and 55% city

    Prius Civic
    $2283 $3621

$1338 bucks different each year at $7.00 bucks a gallon

How about the same date except for $10.00 bucks a gallon

    Prius Civic

    25 miles $ 5.43 $8.62

    Annual fuel cost

    Prius Civic
    $3261 $5172
    $1911 bucks different @ $10.00 bucks a gallon

So at $7.00/gal it would take some 111,000 miles or 7.4 years to recover the more expensive price of the prius vs the civic @ 15,000 mile/yr

$10.00/gallon it would take some 78,000 miles or 5.2 years to recover the more expensive price of the prius vs the civic @ 15,000mile/yr

So...one could wait until the market evens out and then buy a prius.

Of course there are other features that make the prius so cool. This is just an example look the data up yourself. You can go to the above website and compare almost any vehicle side to side (4 vehicles at a time). You can change the price of gas and the miles driven to get a better understanding of how much you will save or lose with how far you drive and what type of car you drive.

This is such a strange concept I'm still having trouble wrapping my head around it. You mean he has been driving the new car and you have been driving an older one?!? In my family and most that I know, the wife ALWAYS drives the newest car. It been this way since the beginning of time and always shall be. :D

Our '08 Prius replaced the '92 Niata that I was driving while my wife drove the '94 Camry. Now she drives the Prius and I got the hand-me-down Camry.

if you want it, get it.

i had an 04. it was wrecked, i had $25,000 after settlement. could have bought anything i wanted...never looked at another vehicle. imm, nothing is the same as a Prius, not a the HCH...nothing...

ignore the payback arguments. its obvious to me that that is not important to you. get the Pri. you will not regret it. get anything else, its a strong possibility that you will.

in the beginning of time men pulled women around town by their hair, is that what you mean....little fuel was required, hence the reason for the prius being invented

Agreed. When compared to a Yaris, it's much more difficult to justify a Prius on finances alone. However, there are other factors here. The Prius is just about the most reliable car on the road. And probably the biggest factor is it's resale value at 10000 miles will be much higher than the Yaris's.

Not if the title is in my name only and I earned the paycheck by getting up every morning and showing up for work. Some couples do have separate finances.
