Is this a money pit, or a keeper?

    Good morning! I am in the process of purchasing a 2014 Prius v two with 156000 miles. It drives great and looks beautiful, but rattles like a box of rocks when switching from electric to gas when it’s been in park for a bit. I really want to buy this car, but all of these codes popped up when I had the recall completed on it. Toyota won’t diagnose unless I pay, but I couldn’t leave the car with them, yesterday and come to find out they don’t have anything available today. I have to tell the dealership yes or no today, but I can’t tell if the codes are bad, or just part of regular maintenance. I’ve been looking them up, but I’m getting nowhere because I really have no idea what I’m reading.

    I want this car, bad, but not bad enough to spend more money fixing it than on the gas I’d have to pay on the car I traded. I traded a gorgeous 2008 Cadillac SRX v8 with only 124000 miles for this guy.

    Run away if you don't want to wait and get a firm diagnosis and price from the dealer. The list of codes usually comes because of one problem that has created other symptoms. You could easily have a clogged egr coolant tube (maybe $800 at dealer), a bad or weak high voltage battery ($2000-2500) or a bad head gasket ($2000 and up including an engine). If this was already your car you might try some advanced diy yourself but to buy it blind would be a mistake.

    Your post is a little confusing, but I gather you've not actually bought the car as yet? If so, I would walk away. If you have bought it, is there a 3 day cooling-off period in the States, when you can back out, no questions asked? I would do that if needed.

    Just too much headaches, not what you need.

    I wouldn't buy it for a dollar. 3 cylinders misfiring. Shame as they are wonderful cars. Now if you can do without a car for a month, have a source for a low mileage engine from a wreck, and the tools and patience to do it yourself.

    I wouldn't do it unless you have access to the tools, techstream, and a garage. With those codes it could be one thing causing some of the others but as stated above by others your looking at spending alot of money unless your qualified and able to tackle it yourself

    thanks for all the input. I ended up being able to get the car into my Toyota dealership, and the codes were cleared after the recall was updated. They said the car was in good condition, and they didn't find anything that needs to be fixed. So, I went ahead and purchased the car. Fingers crossed. LOL

    ..many other things to go bad soon...... never heard of anything like this after reading the rest of the info..... be prepared to spend thousands in the next 60 thousand miles..... sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.......good luck...you'll need it and $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

    You’re right. the engine block blew a hole in it from the connection rod breaking. It’s going to cost me about 3-4K to fix it. I only paid 6k for it, so I think I think I’ll still be in black? I’m actually in the process of looking for an engine. Toyota said they’d install it for me for 2k, the cost of labor. I hope this live, lose, and learn lesson taught me what an idiot I was.

    (I am assuming Flotida is a typo and that she was suckered into buying it)

    You have 156,000 miles on your car.
    Do you know what maintenance has been done on it?

    If you do not KNOW it was done recently, it needs:
    New Coolant in engine and inverter
    New Spark Plugs
    New Air filters Engine and cabin
    Oil and filter change
    Bazzilion Point Inspection
    New ATF in transaxle*

    I would test the brake fluid for metal/water*

    * not in Toyota Manual

    Lol...not fake...I wish it was. I ended up calling a few places for engines, and the cheapest I found was $1600 with 71000 and 90 day warranty. The Toyota dealership has one similar (73000 miles) for $3000 with a 3 year warranty. Now, the dilemma is whether I fix it, for $5000 and keep the car, or take a huge loss and buy another car...this is definitely not a fake post. Promise

    I am in Florida...I thought I did my homework on it. I got the CARFAX and it showed proper maintenance. I took it DeLand Toyota and paid $60 for a diagnostic inspection before I would even consider buying the car. They told me everything was fun and the codes had disappeared after the update. My son has a code reader, and it also showed no codes cleared. Right now, the car is at Daytona Toyota, and it’s been there, since the day it blew. They’ve been nice and even gave me a loaner car.. even though I didn’t buy from them.

    Next will be the traction battery.... then the brake pump.....both thousands at a Toyota Dealer.....
    Are those engine prices installed and guaranteed not to go over the quoted price?
    Who did you purchase this from ......?
    If you can't do the repairs yourself...better think about getting a non hybrid car.....
    I like the gas mileage but would not do it over again...... I paid $5000 for mine and now have $7000 in it.....and my trani is going bad....but I do have a replacement and installing it my self and it's not a easy job.

    sorry to hear it sue. if you're anywhere near tampa, call todd at tampa hybrids.

    also, try calling toyota customer service and throw yourself on the mercy of the court. ask for goodwill warranty help.

    I still haven’t been able to decide what to do, and I can’t say enough about how the Toyota dealership has helped me with all this t8me they’re giving me. I mean.....they do have my car. Lol.
    I also worry about the components your talking about, and I worried about them before I bought the car.....I never thought it would be the engine...I always thought it’d be the battery.
    I purchased the car from a large, reputable dealership.
    The engine prices are not with installation. Toyota is willing to take 50% off of labor, so I’m looking at 1100 fort labor.

    I’ve continued researching about engine replacement and didn’t even realize the 4 types of engines...remanufactured, rebuilt, used, or crate. In my ideal situation, remanufactured is the way to go, but my wallet says “used”. The
    I wrote a whole blurb the other day, but I didn’t post. Ugh
    The engine prices are w/o installation.
    Quotes are final.
    I haven’t purchased one yet. I’m still considering whether I should keep the car at this point, and how difficult it will be when I try to sell it.

    I’m so confused. I paid 6k and the dealership wants t9 give me $500. not in a million years would I be ok with that. The6 say they can give me more, if I buy a newer car....I know that trick already. I told them I won’t finance more than 4K on a car as new or better than mine.

    BUT, I’m still struggling to get all of the money for the engine together, so financing a car would mean nothing out of pocket and my savings account isn’t depleted....again.
