Is there a pdf somewhere for wheel bearing replacement?

    I did a quick seach, I'm looking for a pdf that shows all the steps in order. I've replaced wheel bearings on other cars, but want to make sure I don't skip anything.

    Hey, thanks for your help JeffD.

    I have one more question for everyone: What the hell is staking and unstaking the axle nut? What does it entail, how do you do it, what's it "look like", etc.

    On every car i've taken an axle nut off, there is a cotter pin through the axle, you pull the pin out, and put an impact on the axle nut. So what is the deal here? The diagram is kinda weird. Will I need a special tool? If I'm also replacing the axle anyways, can I just put a huge impact on it and go to town?

    Well that made it clear as day. So staking means bending the lip of the nut into the gap. Unstaking is bending that lip back out. Looks like i'll just grab a $7 nut tomorrow morning and not worry about the old one or the old axle.

    Looks like I'll be doing my driver's side front wheel bearing next week. I had just replaced the passenger's side 2 months ago. It's like they were DESIGNED to fail at the same time.

    My 2004 Prius still is on its original wheel bearings (and brakes) at 255k miles. My son's 1996 Subaru at 280k miles has gone through 6 wheel bearings.

    Toyota wheel bearing seem to fail when driven through deep puddles too often.

    I'm a first timer on this forum and it will also be my first time trying to work on my own car bearings. Could you send me the PDF with the steps required? I've changed and packed bearings on trailers many times but the cost for my Prius is not something I can afford right now at a dealership. I've never had any of my previous car/trucks have this issue. I have had over 100k on all of my vehicles. I'm a little nervous because I'm a 50+year old female but I'm mechanical and desperate times require fearlessness. Thanks

    I think you're supposed to replace a staked nut. We had some work done once by a dealership (on a Honda) and they reused, just staked it in a slightly different position the second time.

    I've attached some of the references I used before my husband and I tackled this job. I did the research and bought the parts he did the manual labor (I had shoulder surgery last year so no way was I going to do this).
    Once we had the parts which included the hub assembly (Timken HA590064 front wheel bearing & Hub assembly $125.00, the Toyota/Lexus Front Axle Lock nut remover kit $37.00 and the new lock nut $??? I bought it at the dealership along with a new dust cover. We were set. The most important things I did for my husband was the research. Number #1 disconnect the battery so you don't screw up the warning lights and codes when touching the brake sensors, #2 buy the specialty tool to remove the lock on the axle nut and the correct size socket for the nut (see above best $37.00 I've ever spent). #3 Once the hub assembly is removed still embedded on the steering knuckle we took it to pep boys and had it pressed out ($45.00). There were no bad words or any air tools required. The process took about 6 hours because he took it to Pep boys and did not stay waiting for them to call. I called 3 hours later and it was done where it may have been completed long before then. He only changed the right side and it's been a year. So far so good.     Great, thank you. My only concern was removing the hub assembly. Good to know pep boys does it. My car came from the northeast and am pretty sure the damn thing is fused together.
