Is Shell buying charging stations to slow EV adoption?

    I used to use a few charging stations owned by Greenlots. Shell bought Greenlots in 2019. About a year or two ago all three of these charging stations became non-operational. They still haven’t been repaired years later.

    Shell bought Volta around the end of last year. They slowly transitioned the branding on the charging stations at my local mall and just switched everything over to the Shell app a month ago. Ever since then, 3 of the 4 chargers I used to regularly use are non-operational. I first reported the issue to Shell on 8/30/24. The last time I checked on Thursday, they were still not repaired.

    I wonder if Shell is buying up charging stations without plans to maintain them. This could slow EV adoption, as EV users will complain to friends about the terrible reliability of public charging. Now their friends will be less likely to buy EVs and thus there will be more ICE vehicles on the road buying Shell gas for longer. Then if the EV charging stations become more profitable than selling gas, they can ramp up the maintenance on these stations later.

    This may not be the case, as Volta and Greenlots weren’t fantastic at maintaining their stations. It may have taken them a week or two to repair a down charging station, but not months or years. Maybe Shell is focusing on maintaining L3 chargers over L2 chargers. Do other people have the same experience with L3 chargers? Maybe the free (add supported) charging at Volta stations and the low price ( < $0.30 per KWh) for charging at the old Greenlots stations provided no incentive for Shell to devote resources to get them back up and running. Maybe this is just another example of poor maintenance of non-Tesla EV charging stations that isn’t unique to Shell. It seems like the government and EV charging companies are focussed on building out the charging network, but not focussed enough on maintaining the existing network. However, I feel Shell is several times worse than Charge Point for L2 charging.

    it depends on where you travel. if you read ev forums, some have better or worse luck with different brands while others sometimes have the opposite.
    shell isn't the only one with maintenance problems, and often highly regarded.
    tesla is the only system that nearly always gets great reviews world wide.

    Not sure. Shell stations don’t work with my car. I get an error.

    Also, they’re low amperage stations (200A) so cars that need high amperage (like Teslas or other high peak power 400V cars like Volvo/Polestar) will have terrible speeds. Even if I could charge, in theory, I’ll be in the 140-150kW range (they advertise 180kW because they output 900V at 200A) but I can’t test because I can’t connect to them.

    Up here, Petro Canada was the first to place chargers at their stations to connect the east and west coast. But since their announcement a few years ago, reliability of their station has gone downhill. Look at PlugShare and most of their stations have a repair logo. Even if they’re working, they’re at reduced power. It’s a far cry when I used them in 2022 at full power.

    A Shell in town, has been on PlugShare as coming soon for nearly 3 years. Don't hold your breath. A Shell on the way to work, took two years to put up the stations. They sat there, never turned on, from last December to September of this year, where they just disappeared overnight. Maybe Shell is playing a shell game.

    Matches my experience with Shell in Corinth MS. It was shown in plugshare but when I got there ... nothing. I suspect Shell feed their "plans" to plugshare and didn't follow through.

    I wouldn't put it past an oil company to do something like that.

    However, high-power charging stations are notoriously difficult to design, power, set up, and maintain (they use huge amounts of DC power, at different voltages, over different plug standards). The industry suffers from a serious lack of capital investment outside of Tesla.

    On a side note, I've often thought that a restaurant chain combined with charging stations could be something worth while. For one thing, the place wouldn't smell like diesel and gasoline, making the restaurant 100x better. Also, since people are stuck there for a bit longer, there may be more interest in sitting down to enjoy a good meal while charging.

    My local mass charging station is just off a major highway, 50 years from Starbucks, 150 yards from a grocery store. 12 stalls. Roughly half way between the state capital and a resort destination of some reputation ...Pinehurst. Planed by the team that got fired by Elon.

    I stopped by a Whole Foods Paycheck this morning and happened to notice about a half dozen EV chargers in the parking bay. They were all Shell-branded, and none looked broken. Only one in use.

    This made me consider the idea that (much like their retail gasoline operations) it could be that Shell is concentrating on maintenance and upkeep in the rich neighborhoods.

    Those sound like the Shell stations that used to be Volta. They tend to be at Whole Foods and malls where I live. The ones that work near me are usually full all day by 8:30am on weekdays (maybe a little later on weekends) because they are free to charge. Maybe not in Pennsylvania, but if you saw only 1 of 9 free stations in use in southern California, I suspect a good number of the empty stations would not be working. There would be no way to know without plugging them in because the Shell app is about as reliable as their charging stations. I plug-in at a mall on the way to work in the morning well before the mall is even open. It is always full by the time I am done charging. About a month after fully transitioning to Shell, only 4 out of the 8 have been working for 2 months. If you just looked at them, you would just think they all were working, but some of them weren't being used. Then if you try to plug-in, you will see why 4 of them aren't in use. They don't look any different than the functional stations. The electronic billboards with adds on the non-functioning charging stations still work great.

    The Volta stations that Shell took over around here aren't as reliable as they used to be.

    I didn't think to include it in that brief post- I travel for a living, and I happened to be in Burbank that day. It was also very early in the morning, so there were maybe 5 other cars in the entire parking garage.

    Another detail: The one charging bay that was in use? It was right next to a big placard that stated "Charging is for customers while shopping," and the car was occupied by somebody very obviously not shopping.

    Made me think that maybe the dissatisfaction with this arrangement is not one-sided.

    Also, did everyone in the EV/charging world already forget about bagging the handles?

    interesting. the whole foods near me removed the free charger and had chargepoint or someone similar replace it.
    i don't think shell would accomplish much by driving volta into the ground. more likely, they weren't prepared for the massive maintenance needed to keep them up and running. it's an industry wide problem, except for tesla.

    Around here, it sure seems like they're trying. A few Volta stations are now gone and the ones that are still there have complaints on Plug Share, that they're not working.
