Is Prime more quiet +85 mph?

We normally drive our cars on the interstate with cruise set at 82mph.

I see a big difference in noise between summer tires and winter tires.

Our Gen-3 makes more noise but it requires it's ICE to be running from time to time, and it is 6 years old. Whereas our Prime is much quieter running on battery.

 

If you're going to illegally exceed the speed limit and thereby endanger not only yourself but everyone around you on the road, any difference in loudness is really immaterial. If the car is quieter at those excessive speeds, it's only because Toyota was making it quieter at lower speeds. The fact that it may be quieter is no excuse for breaking the law and endangering yourself and others.

You may wish to refer to the Japanese Toyota website, which states:

If you are not well-versed in the Japanese language, I will inform you that it suggests that the maximum speed driven using cruise control should be about 100km/h.

If you are in Texas, which is the one state that has some road segments which can legally be driven at over 80 mph, I retract my comments about legality, however if you want to follow Toyota guidelines (as would be prudent), you should still drive much slower.

The above was a parody of your last post to me in another thread (Adaptive cruise control / safety sense issue | Page 4 | PriusChat), and is equally cogent. In fact, I do notice that this car is a lot quieter and more stable at 80 mph + than my old Prius 3

 

Interstate going through our town is posted at 75mph. Driving at 82 keeps me from being ran over by the state troopers as they zoom by me.

 

+80 mph, before sunrise, in fog?

80 kmh is usually my limit, I steer clear of the freeway which is 10~20 km more IIRC.

No, the Japanese "Kibono-Shasoku..." in this context is not suggesting the maximum speed should be about 100 km/h, but it is saying that "the ideal/desired vehicle speed" may be about 50-100 km/h...to begin maintaining vehicle speed by setting the radar cruse control...IMHO.

I am sorry to be picky. It is just that many things can get lost/misunderstood in translation...

 

Don't want to get off-topic from Bob's post, but here in the big city (LA County) it is absolutely crazy on our freeways. And most city streets too. A total disregard for the speed limits and traffic laws. It can be very stressful and takes all the enjoyment out of driving.

You steer clear of the freeways, Mendel. So do you ever take any long trips in your Prius? I'm cutting down my driving significantly. So have many retired people I know. I'm only 64, but it's just not fun anymore (around here).

Quiet is GOOD at any speed. It's nice to know they are making the Prime quieter. My '16 regular Prius, not so much.

 

Traffic rules are largely disregarded here too. People roll stop signs and turn right on red lights with hardly hesitating, speed limits are virtually acknowledged as minimums. Tailgating and aggressive lane serving witnessed at least once per outing. It's not always bad, but when it is..,

We got up the coast to Powell River a week back, but mostly just local driving. Starting to think about a carless future. Cheaper and safer for sure.

 

Well said. I witness all the same, daily. Excessive speed, overly-aggressive driving, and distracted driving (cell phone use) is totally out of control. Even with new laws in California, drivers just ignore it. We need a Prius Chat psychologist, or sociologist, to explain to us why some people become raving lunatics when they get behind the wheel of a vehicle. It empowers them in some weird way? They know no fear. And don't care who's life they endanger or what laws they break.

Utah has some roads with 80 mph limits but 5-10 over any limit seems to be sop.

 

Back on topic. We traded a 2013 Prius v for the Prime. The v was unbearable over 75 mph. The Prime is much quieter but still is not a great highway cruiser compared to our 2016 Impala. You have to sacrifice something to get over 50 mpg.

 

I'm going to ask if I can rent a Prime for the day, and see how much difference there is between my old-fashioned '16 non PiP, and the new Prime. Very interested in experiencing that quietness.

 

I've driven both and the prime is quieter in ev but I would say they are the same in hybrid mode.

I think that driving the BMW has caused Bob to drift over to the dark side a little.

 

Funny just this morning I sped up to 92 on the 210 HOV lane to get some jerk who was tailgating me off my back when I was only doing 76 mph. It got noisier but I was more interested in how planted the car seemed. Next time I get up to that speed in UT or TX, which I have in other vehicles ... (And it's very exhausting on I-10 between San Antonio and El Paso, keeping up at that speed. Things happen a lot quicker.) I'll check the noise level.
