Is oil filter #YZZA2 changed to #YZZE1 ?

    I went to a toyota dealership and got an OEM oil filter with part number 90915-YZZE1 however on John's website and several other posts, the filter part number is 90915-YZZA2. The lady said that toyota changes the part numbers occasionally to prevent its parts from being copied by other companys. It seemed like she was lying, but what do I know... She did look it up in the computer before she handed it to me, so it should work. Anyhow, is what she said true? is part YZZA2 now YZZE1? Thanks. Also, how often should the filter be replaced? Should I wait until 5k or 10k to change filters?

    The one that John suggests is a little longer and has a larger filtering area. If I go to the parts dept. they bring out the ...E1. However, when I brought the Prius in for its 15k check the Service dept put in the larger one.

    Would there be anyway to get the larger one, A2, through the service dept? When I went there, the lady check the computer and it said, "part A2 has been replaced by E1" I saw it myself. But from what youre saying it seems like A2 is still available, just not through the service dept. I just dont be to be using a less-efficient filter.

    I typically do not use manufacturers oil and air filters when I do service to my vehicle. I have found that manufacturers, such as Purolator, make excellent products, which are often times better than the manufacturer branded items. Purolator's PureOne filter series is highly regarded and an excellent product.

    Lots of 3rd party manufacturers have really wonderful products which you should look into.

    I'm using Purolator PureOne PL14476.

    The regular Purolator filter is L14476.

    I remember reading an article online where a guy decided to get a bunch of filters and cut them open and see how they were constructed. He was convinced that the regular Purolator filter was the genesis of the Toyota filter you buy at a Toyota garage. Makes sense considering that Toyota doesn't make their own oil filters, but would contract it out to somebody. The author didn't seem all that impressed with Fram filters. But again, I'm operating on memory.

    Have the parts manager order filter
    90915-10003. This is the filter that originally came on the prius from Japan. They are a bit more expensive but worth it. I also special order the original drain plug gaskets - 90430-12031

    Both of the part numbers above have been superseded, however they are still available from Toyota. I have noticed that quality of the japanese filter is superior to the US version. Its easy to tell the difference - Japanese filters have a red base gasket, where the US filters have a black one. I have cut open the Japanese filter and the US YZZA2 filter and found the media of the Japanese filter to be similar to a Mobil 1 and K&N filter (99.2% efficiency using SAE J1858 Multi-Pass Efficiency Test)

    The YZZE1 filter has a broader range of engine applications than the YZZA2. You will notice Toyota changes part numbers often for this reason - Especially on common maintenance items.

    Went to the Dealership yesterday to pick up a filter and, indeed, the stock part number for the Prius Oil Filter has been changed to 90915-YZZE1.

    the replacement oil filter you get from Toyota is Mfg by Denso at their US plant. A1 and A2 are interchangeable on the Prius. I pay less for a genuine Toyota filter than I do for a non origional. $4.92 Canadian so cut 25% off that for a US price.
