Have a pretty bad leak, from the driver side axle seal. Got under it to start seal replacement and found the axle has a lot (quarter inch) of up and down play coming out of the trans housing. My uneducated mind says the bearing is shot and that would require a trans removal. Am I correct? TIA
Is this measurement being taken while the axle is completely seated on the ring in the transmission or is this half pulled out or the axle shaft splines not completely seated in the transmission there is a little bit of play I mean look at how it fits together
If the axle is fully seated in the trans, then there is likely a bunch of wear on both the axle and in the differential carrier in the trans. Would have to disassemble and see what's going on. Might be worth getting another axle and seeing how it fits, but I wouldn't hold my breath. I have seen this when something lets one axle spin REALLY fast but the other stays still (broken CV joint). Have had to replace the trans and the axle when that happened. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
The JDM importers have them I bought one for my car or for my new engine to go in my car so that both pieces would be similar types of mileage I think the transmission MG1 and 2 all of it together was $190 or $159 or something like that is very inexpensive so of course I bought one.
