I was about to throttle my iPhone 4 data plan to save some money, so I went into my account to check my usage, and found that I'm way above normal. I was able to correlate some large data transfers to the time when I was leaving home or work, i.e. starting my Prius. I have Bluetooth audio enabled and have iTunes Match, but it's set to not use cellular data. The only thing I can think of is that the Entune system is usurping my phone in order to perform updates? Would it do that regardless of whether I had the Entune app running on my phone? Or if I didn't select the Apps tab (I know if I go there that it will say "updating")? If so, is there a way to disable this or perform updates manually when I'm on a wifi connection?
Profligate Pandora usage has blown many a data plan. You can just turn off the internet connection via the Prius Setup/Bluetooth. Leave the Bluetooth on for phone and music (iPod) and turn it off for internet. I only use the internet connection for traffic when I'm using the nav and have not noticed much data usage so far but it is always a good idea to monitor the data usage. You never know when some app will run amok.
j In my case I wasn't intentionally doing anything related to data usage, which is why I'm suspecting something like an automatic update...
To me it looks like entune is 'USELESS', as I do not want to have a phone with dataplan, which would add about 100$ to my monthly expense to buy a dataplan cellphone. I am sure Toyota is giving this 3yrs free, so that it is good for cellphone data providers can maximize their profit and share profit with Toyota. I hope someone can open the port ,where we can sync data using wifi from startbucks etc.
This reminds me of the chemist that invented "The Universal Solvent". Great says his lab partner, what are you going to keep it in?
There are a number of apps you might try using to monitor the data usage if you want to try and nail it down. Data Usage by sigterm looks pretty good, but haven't tried it. It says it supports geotagging of the usage data, but doesn't seem real clear on how you see that info. Pro version seems to be able to output excel csv files, maybe its in there? If that works it could definitely help you figure out how much the bw entune is burning. DataMan Pro by XVision also looks to have some good features, including data usage by app and mapping of usage locations, but I don't see it on the app store right now? DataMan Lifts the Lid on Your Data-Hungry iPhone Apps One trick to all these apps seems to be that you have to launch them any time you reboot your phone and keep them running in the background to collect stats.
