I am currently using the aux plug to plug my ipod into the Prius, because I have the type of aux cable that also has a charging cable which I plug into the charger in the console, that way the battery on the ipod never runs out. Are there any advantages to plugging in my ipod with a usb cable instead of the aux cable? And will this keep my ipod charged as well? Linda
The USB will keep your iPod charged. It also gives you the function of changing tracks and looking through your music with your display unit. I would think its more convenient. That way you can just keep your Ipod tucked away in the compartment instead of having it occupy one of the cup holders.
I have my iPod connected to USB, and keep it the console box. It keeps charged. My iPhone is hooked up BT. This means no Entune, but not a big loss I think. On a long trip I might switch to USB for phone to charge, but it really doesn't need it much because it is mostly idle. The ipos USB functions are very good.
I tried the usb connection, but I can't fast forward or rewind when listening. I've been listening to mp3's of lectures, and this is a real problem. And it seems that all control of the ipod is lost to the car system. I suppose this method is fine for music, but definitely not lectures or books. Back to the aux for me.
I think fast forward/rewind is limited to skipping forward or back tracks, so probably a problem with lectures, books, podcasts.
An iPhone 4 needs 5 volts, 1amp in order to charge. The USB connection in Prius (like most USB ports) is 5 volt 1/2 amp, which will charge slowly, but not if the phone is in use. When I drove from LA to SF, using the phone's GPS and Bluetooth most of the way, the battery depleted as I drove. There are 12v, 1A car chargers designed for iPhone which will charge the phone at full speed.
