It looks like all you iPhone & iPod Touch users out there won't have to buy an additional adapter in order to wirelessly stream your tunes in the Prius. Today's iPhone OS 3.0 announcement of features from Apple includes opening up the iPhone's Bluetooth capabilities. A2DP support, which allows stereo audio to be broadcast via Bluetooth, will also allow the Prius to even play streaming Internet radio through your iPhone. Any Pandora users out there?

This is really exciting to hear... I love my iPhone... but I'll have to stick with the AUX jack in the 09... no biggie.

And this is just the 2010? I'm not a Bluetooth genius. What's different about the 2010 Bluetooth in comparison to the G2 Bluetooth?

While I know iPhone 3.0 is capable of sending a Bluetooth music stream, is the 2010 Prius really capable of receiving it? I'd be a tad surprised, if so, as I've never seen such capabilities in a car up till now.

It wouldn't matter for me, however. I have a Kensington LiquidAux that lets me connect my iPhone to a dock connector, so charge it, play music (including Pandora) over the stereo, and also control the iPhone from a remote control attached to my steering wheel.

Such a remote control is vital to me, since the lack of physical button on the iPhone make it hazardous to navigate music while driving.

2010 Bluetooth allows streaming audio. See this YouTube video for a demo of me doing this w/ my Blackberry Curve 8900.

Yes, that is one of the new gadgets in the 2010 (with the bluetooth option, that is).

    Whuddya know? Cool.

I like how you can control it from the Prius controls, too. That's a pretty awesome feature.

Yay! Cables are history. Well, except for charging...

Can't wait for Bluetooth 3.0 with video streaming. ;)

I wouldn't get my hopes too high. Every time I have tried A2DP it has resulted in unacceptable sound quality degradation. It might be ok for podcasts but is just not enough for music even on the Prius.

My Pearl 8100 w/ "upgraded" OS likely would do it too. Most any device w/ A2DP should work.

I couldn't perceive any degredation, and given that there's many ways to implement A2DP, this very well could have been streaming the MP3 directly rather than transcoding. I'd have to test w/ a burned CD and then w/ an AUX cable to see if there was any noticeable difference.

What about auto syncing of iPhone contacts with the 2010 Prius; do you think A2DP solves this problem. Lots of other car manufacturers offer this feature; any info here?

There are three separate profiles in play here when syncing a phone w/ the 2010. Audio/Video control, and Stereo Headphone are in use when playing audio. Handsfree phone is in use for telephone. They have different functions.

It has been reported that syncing entire phone books should be easier w/ the 2010. I'm anxious to see if it correctly handles phone book records with multiple numbers correctly (i.e. One record with home, work, and cell numbers). It's tedious to take many contacts and split them out for the Prius, then revert them for real life use :(

Prius Team already confirmed that syncing of iphone contacts works on the 2010.

Forgive my ignorance in this area, but does anyone have any knowledge or speculation on whether this will help sync contacts from iphone 3G to the MFD phonebook in a 2008 bluetooth factory-equipped model? As I understand it, currently there is no way to do this without a multi-step/phone workaround.

I still hope for an easy way to get my contacts into my prius phonebook, but suspect this will always be a pipe-dream.

    thx.

    AWESOME !!!!

I would prefer to have a solid cable, but hey this is ten times better than having nothing!
(and the benefit of bluetooth is that no adapter is needed if someone wants to link another type of device to the car - just update the software)

Solid AUX cable can't skip songs, and having Bluetooth negates the basic need for the DICE or USB interfaces. Granted, in my test, Bluetooth didn't display song information on the MFD, but I could live w/o that if all other things were the same.

If it does show that the audio is being transcoded prior to sent over Bluetooth, I'd probably opt for the cable or USB interface as well.

usb/iphone interface that will be available as accessory is always better choice, but it is awesome that there will be an easy way to stream music.

of course, most phones released in past 2-3 years have this feature and iphone is getting it now :).

Also another question is what version of A2DP is supported by prius and what are the maximum features/possibilities for it, and what version will be supported by iphone.

Honestly we have Avensis with Nav with this feature, and I never tried it :)

How would someone setup the ability to do this?

I had an ipod kit installed the day I picked my IV up and had to have it removed because it didn't work. Using bluetooth would be an option but since so much seems to involve having the nav package, I'm hoping that a non-nav unit will do this. Is there a A2DP dock adapter for non-iphone ipods? I've got a 160G ipod classic that has all my music on it. It would be great to find a way to use that but if the iphone is the only way, then I'd still be happy...

Love the car so far. I went from a car that got 15MPG. So far the only thing that I miss is the ability to stomp on the pedal and be in the next timezone, minus a lot of gas... I figure that the Prius should pay for itself at some time...
