It's been eight long years of driving Priapus and not having transferred my iPhone address book. With the iPhone5, I was really hoping the data transfer would be supported. Alas!, it's not. So I hit the internet and here's what I found:

    Download Prius Phonebook Free

It talks about using your MacBook, in the car, to transfer the contacts. However, My iMac is in a den above the garage. Sure enough, with Priapus in the garage, it was close enough to work.

There is no warranty, the instructions are acceptable, but the results speak for themselves. I now have a fully-populated address book for the first time in eight years.

Here's the process I found that works:
    1) Make sure your phone is paired to your car.
    2) Turn the car on.
    3) Get to the [Transfer Contacts] screen in the car and push the [Transfer Contacts] button. It's not actually called that but I can't remember exactly what it's called right now. This step preps the car to receive the contacts.
    4) Click the [Send] button in the software.
    5) Wait! Don't get overly anxious. First, it will use the computer's bluetooth to find devices. It found my phone first - and I was confused - but then it found the MAC address of the car and then resolved the name as "Handsfree Headset" or something like that.
    6) Select the car from the list of detected devices and click [Transfer].
    7) Watch as addresses pour into your car.
    8) Wait again because the software will finish before the car does.

Make sure you read the Readme.txt file that comes with the software.

I gotta tell you, after eight years, I'm thrilled to find a solution.

I tried doing just what you recommended, but it didn't work. I have a MacBook Pro and had trouble linking via bluetooth to my phone. It would link, then it wouldn't. I don't know what went wrong.

I should also say that I did have wifi access, but I do not have the navigation feature. Does that matter?

I do have the navigation. I'm not sure if that makes a difference.
After two years, I don't remember enough to help troubleshoot. But I can tell you that it took me a few attempts to get everything worked out. So if the first attempt doesn't take, try again.

I am having the same problem but have identified the problem to the Prius. I downloaded the app as well as the Android version to an HTC Thunderbolt and an IOS version to my iPhone 5s. In every case the Prius disconnects the bluetooth the second you hit transfer contacts. It is also disconnecting the minute Siri attempts a voice dial. My Prius is a 2008 leather full package. I have tried for hours and nothing
