I know we should sell our prius , I think Hummer of Scottsdale AZ. has a few (dozen) sitting on the lot going cheap a mere 69k plus stereo is extra. We will show those tree huggers a thing or two hahahahah

It should be a funny "news" show I would like to see it but it will not be shown here.

Right now they could not give me a hummer unless it was like the " Terminators" only electric powered and not HYdrogen CAUSE we don't have no stinkin hydrogen refueling station, Wth are they thinking

I hope the person that's doing the interview studied up on the subject, and isn't another shill of Detroit.

Well, at least the show brought up the point that the Sudbury (sp?) site information is old. That alone should make everyone suspicious of Spinella's intent. Of course, not everyone is going to hear that.

Also, Spinella does indicate where he gets the 109k lifetime for the Prius. That reason, is in my opinion BS though.

How much energy workers consume to commute to work?!?!? How the hell does he know that?

    Hi All,

He said energy was more expensive in Japan. It sounds like its the cost of energy, not the actual amount of energy used. And its actually better enviormentally for energy to cost more, as it makes its use a much more careful thing.

Besides, who said the Japanese workers did not take the bus or Shinkanzen to work? Japan has much better (and more highly utilized) public transportation than the US, and that would save energy , and probably cost as well. So, he has that backwards too.

I read another editorial about this, where the editor writer was saying the Corrolla was better because of its simpler technology, and the Prius took so much money to develop. Well, DID Spinella consider all the time effort and training that Sir Alex Issigonis had to come up with the front - wheel drive, transverse mounted design, and all the energy the engineers had to expend to come up with all the non-standard parts of the first Mini - NO.

With the Spinella point of view, we would all be around camp fires eating the farm raised Mastadons. No progress would ever happen. Because its too expensive!

I suspect that as with all his data he makes it up.
But who knows, since he refuses to release sources.

the numbers dont add up either.
$2.87 per mile adds up to 28,700 at 10,000 miles, so at his math it will cost you $287,000 to drive (his expected) life of 100,000 miles.
I am no genius and can figure that out. As most prius owners have figured out a tank of gas costs approx. $25 even at $3 a gallon which at the very worst will net you 400 miles. 10 tanks will cost you about $250 and carry you 4000 miles+ again at worst. So 100,000 miles would cost you $6250 (250 tanks x $25) + $25,000 (guess at avg vehicle price) + $600 (20 oil changes @ $30) + $1000 (2 sets of new tires)= $32,850 + any maintenance and repairs. I dont have a calculator but i believe that adds up to about 33 cents per mile.
Of course this isnt everything like your local taxes or registration fee's nor does it include car washes, insurance etc.., but we get the general idea.
of course as the price of gas will continue to go up these numbers will go up but nowhere near the jumps an SUV takes with gas prices.

    Hi F8L,

Yes, they are talking about dust-to-dust. But still, if the Prius owner only spends $.20 / mile (per Idaho National Labs tests) on the car to 125 K miles, where does the other $2.67 come from? I cannot believe that Toyota and Junk Yards are subsidizing the US automotive driving public to the tune of $333750 (125000 times 2.67)!?

Toyota did allot of that same multi-vehicle component stuff with the Prius. The engine block is the same block from the Toyota Echo - ever read up on Hobbit's starter hole post? In a Prius there is no starter in that hole, but its still there! The rear axle is similar to the present Corolla. The original Prius used the same brake disks as another Toyota - and people who sell cross-drilled rotors were quick to figure that out and start adding Prius to their Ebay webpages. Actually, if you read the auto press Toyota is known as the best in the industry regarding using the same parts in different cars. So, Spinella is wrong again.

All this is about is American MBA managers who are crying and fighting back with this third party FUD generator. Because that is all they know how to do. They do not have the engineering background to do a real evaluation of the risks of a new car technology, and they still want the bucks for being in charge of such a large part of American expediture. This was proved by the wrong decisions they made back in the Mid-90's when all the US goverment subsidized hybrid concept cars were running around around each of the Big Three's test tracks but none made it to market. These guys are no longer qualified to hold their positions. The world has changed and rather than haul their sorry rear ends out of the positions they should not be in any longer, they are pushing all this crap media BS on the American public.

Why is Spinella so happy in that interview? Because his job is to create FUD! And he probably has a FUD bonus in his contract for every TV appearance he makes. Spinella probably just made $.20 per SUV sold by one of the Big Three in 2007.

For those not familiar with the marketing term FUD - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fear%2C_uncertainty_and_doubt

Even so the plan with every car is to sell them at a profit. Obvoiusly Toyota is making something from HSD. Otherwise they wouldnt be expanding it.

You know, after reding everything I've seen on PC concerning that argument, I couldn't take more than a few minutes of the report.
Things like this that give the Prius a bad image - until the prospective Prius buyer finds this site :D.

Let me guess, Mr. Spinella thinks that coal power is the way to go for making electricity, right?
