Having this issue on my girlfriend’s pre owned Gen 3. It came with an aftermarket head unit. A pioneer MVH 1400NEX. I noticed that the panel lights on the AC controls as well as the drive mode selectors and mirror adjust controls don’t illuminate when the headlights come on. The gauge cluster lights do work fine. When I pulled the head unit the orange illumination wire coming off the headunit was not connected to anything. I thought this for sure was the issue and reinstalled properly with a new harness. This didn’t fix the issue. The head unit screen also does not dim when the headlights come on like it should. I thought maybe it was a bad rheostat but the rheostat still controls the brightness of the gauge cluster. Also everything on the fuse that is associated with these lights is working properly so I don’t think it is a blown fuse. Anyone have any additional ideas? Thanks.

If the stereos generally wired up correctly the auto dimming feature has nothing to do with the rheostat on the car that dims the dash lights All it does is get a signal from 12 volts in the car that the lights have come on so from the lighting circuit or what have you which is connected to the dimmer wire or something like that when you turn the lights on it automatically dims the screen correct but it has nothing to do with the cars rheostat for the dimming of the lights and should never. So maybe check the wiring again because apparently the stereo doesn't know you turn the lights on The only way it's going to know that is by a wired connection to a colored wire marked in the stereo diagram probably as the dim wire and then you have your yellow that takes 12 volts all the time maybe an orange or red that only gets 12 volts permanently for other functions a blue wire for amplifier antenna and so on and so forth I have seen where people have disconnected these things improperly and reconnected new things without consulting a wiring diagram and had some pretty good messes

Yeah as far as the auto dimming feature of the head unit goes I’m aware that the rheostat has no control over the headunit brightness. The lack of screen dimming was a square issue im having. I thought maybe the rheostat could have something to do with the instrument panel lights not coming on. The lights for the AC panelcontrols drive mode selectors don’t work.

It’s also a plug and play vehicle specific harness for the head unit. So I’m not sure why the illumination wire is not getting power.

Yeah I think all of your dash lights have to go through that dimmer that saying you turn to lower the brightness of the dash or display or whatever that is a thing I think it'll pop right out of its hole and you can inspect the back of it and all of that sometimes they wear out in the middle and all this kind of stuff I don't know the generation 3 control that well so there's always that somebody should be running along here any minute that has a wiring diagram and the two manual set for this car and all of that I would think directly. But I would certainly look at that rheostat control because I think most of your dash lights and all go through it to operate if you will that illumination light should come on as soon as you move the switch to the first position of lighting being on so your dash lights are on your stereo is on and then you see the stereo go dim when you put the lights to the first position should be automatic so then I would think maybe there's a problem with your combination switch which is your light switch and all that business behind the steering wheel highly possible I'm imagining you've checked all your fuses to make sure everything is spot on and not partially blown or anything intermittent.
