Interesting question from a Lyft/Uber driver

    So sometimes I sit at the airport queue and its hot outside, so its convenient to sit with the a/c on and let it do its normal engine off/on procedure and save gas.

    Which brings me to this:

    Would I save more gas by slowly driving around in the parking lot? Or would it generate enough charge to make a difference?

    Just curious. One way to find out....

    You would save more gas by using less energy.....so driving around would waste gas

    Agree. Moving the car's mass requires more work and power and fuel.

    The AC unit is very economical to run, even in hot weather. Just sit back and enjoy.

    Oh I do. I watch the other non hybrid drivers either be miserable or use their gas....like I did before a few weeks ago.

    This thing is still fun to drive and everyone is shocked by how much space is in it. Someone called it The Tardis from Dr Who lol.

    I wish I could avg over 40mpg per tank but most of the time its 39.9 ish. I'm trying all kinds of things on each tank. Fuelly is an awesome resource too.

    But the best part is filling up at $16-17 every other day vs $30-35.

    I think for one tank I'll just drive normal without watching mpg to see what happens. I tried a tank each in Eco, Standard and Power modes. Not a lot of difference although Power Mode is more fun! It confuses people expecting slow.

    To save energy/gas in the queue, you should always use ECO mode, which limits the HVAC energy use. Always use "auto" mode on the HVAC. Turn the temp up 2-3 degrees from your normal comfort level to save even more.

    Change the temp setting 2 degrees with auto/eco and watch the MPG figures vary. Just as if you change the MPH the MPG changes. You have control to a certain extent. But being forced to sit idling isn't going to help you and the statistical difference between 39.9 and 40 is kind of trivial.

    I usually bump up the temp 2-3 as its plenty.

    And I wanted to avg over 40 if I can. Most I had on 1 tank was 41.7. With as many miles as I drive it adds up. But around 40 shouldn't be bad.

    Earlier today I was at 45 but lost 2 sitting in queue. At 39.1 for the day, 39.4 for the tank, which is probably actually 37.4.

    I have learned how to not only maintain mpg on the interstate at 70-75 mph but even have it increase. With other riders in the car too.

    Last tank was 41.5. Before, I could only get 39-40.

    Relax. Your avg will go up after the summer heat. It's your yearly avg that matters most.
