might depend on your state and type of coverage, but that's what i pay for an eleven year old prius.

i'm a little nervous about getting a new car because repairs are so expensive, i can see my premium skyrocketing

Welcome to post-Covid/high inflation 2023! When my bill came last spring I started shopping around (the last ticket I had was in 1975, last accident claimed was in 1990). Credit rating is well over 800 on all systems!
Bottom line: my yearly premium was just under $1000, and every place I checked had it about the same. One of the agents I contacted explained that nearly (if not all) companies had huge jumps in rates this year due to supply chain issues and inflation raising repair costs.
I actually lowered mine by increasing deductibles and trimming not needed extras (lowered it by ~ $150/year.)
My house insurance took a hit too.

If you have Costco give their vendor a look.

Considering parts and maintenance costs for the 2021, $1k sounds average. One example is a headlight. They run $1k and that is just one example of how much some parts are the car cost to replace. Tail lights are another one. Body panels, electronics, batteries. Some of the parts are still comparable to older models, but not to many.
