I am thinking about replacing the stock turn signal flasher with a no-minimum load-12VDC flasher, such as the {CF18-08 LED Bulb Electronic Flasher}. This is in anticipation of some day swapping the rear turn signal lamps with some amber LEDs {7440-A45-T}. I would really prefer not to install in-line resistors. However, I'm not sure how to identify this part's location under the dashboard of a Gen1. In the parts diagrams, the original flasher (PN 81980-47010) seems to float somewhere under the steering column. Can anyone indicate where this can be found, and the level of effort required to do the swap? Thanks.
For those of you that want to run LED Blinkers, in your Gen 1. I finally found the flasher relay after about 3 hours of digging around by the fuse box on the left side of the dash. You will need to pull the fuse box loose to get at the blinker relay. There are two sliver 10mm bolts that need to come off, one at top on right of fuse box, on white plastic bracket, and one on the bottom of the fuse box, its also a white plastic bracket. Then you can pull it loose, forward towards the driver, and push it to the right side, you may have to clip some tie wraps, and pop the cable mount loose also, on the right side of it. then you can reach in, and mine was a gray relay mounted high at the back of the fire wall, second one in from the left side. I pulled the cable of and just plugged my new adjustable rate flasher in. Adjusted it to flash nice and slow. Put it back together, after tucking the new relay in out of the way. The original flasher is still mounted. Works great now!
Okay! This description makes a lot of sense, and explains why it was impossible to locate the relay without some disassembly. I'm not sure that this is still worth the effort. But if I find the opportunity, just might try to put in an electronic flasher and then swap in the LEDs for the turn signal lamps.
I replaced all the light bulbs, with LEDs, in the car, blinkers, running lights, license plate lights, the internal trunk light, reverse lights, and will soon try the headlights also. They look brighter, and use less current too.
