about installing a Glass Breakage Sensor, is it fairly straightforward, like installing a Vaistech module? Or is it something better left to the dealers?

The complete factory pdf was posted here I believe:
    Glass Breakage Sensor Installation
It looks rather straightforward. I'd do it, if I could figure out how to get the dealer to activate the alarm.

I assume that this works with the standard VIP security system? I have a Prius (option package 7, Seaside Pearl) on order since December and when I ordered the car the sales critter tried to claim I needed to purchase an additional $1200 security system for the Prius to use the GBS. This site has been invaluable, since the dealer made all sorts of claims, like that the 100K warranty cost $2800, among other things. They claim I should get my car in the next shipment after Friday's (tomorrow) car shipment.

The PDF seems to indicate that no additional security system is required other than the one included with the option package I've ordered.

From everything I've read, the alarm system is already installed, just not activated. The dealer has to activate it with their diagnostic scantool.

When I bought my car I just purchased an add-on alarm (didn't know the car alrady had a basic one in it) for about $100, which included a Glass Breakage Sensor, as well as a Shock Sensor, you can pick these up at Target and the like for a little bit of nothing to. The Alarm guy even tied the new system into the existing remote, basically it's set up that it arms and disarms when the driver's door locks and unlocks.

I just had the Glass Breakage Sensor installed by the dealer, but I'm not sure it works. I tapped on the driver's window quite strongly and it doesn't go off. The dealer said it was set so as not to cause false alarms, like a cat jumping onto the windows. Do you think it should be set to be more sensitive? I'd like it to at least go off when someone's tapping on the glass (a burglar who might check to see if the GBS is in fact installed), or do you think it would cause false alarms?

I have this on my 2005 Tacoma. The instructions that came with it said to test it by tapping on your window closest to the sensor/microphone with a key or something metal. I tested mine and it goes off when I tap kinda hard. Make sure you wait the 30 sec. for the alarm to arm and not have your SKS in your pocket. How much did the dealer charge you to install it?

The dealer charged me $180. Seems kinda pricey to me, and costs more than the part, but it does seem a bit involved according to the instruction manual, and I don't have a diagnostic device to activate it. How much did they charge you? Today I took my Prius back to the dealer to test it, and a mechanic whacked the window hard with the back of a rubberized handle of a screwdriver, which set it off. It was a pretty hard whack, a force which I thought would have broken the glass. Just wondering if I should increase the sensitivity a bit more so that in case a burglar decides to test it out by tapping with keys, it would go off.

I called my local dealer and they said they don't have it listed for the 2006 yet?

    Is 08586-47841 the correct part number for my 06 w/package 8 ?

    Thanks

Where can i buy it? My local dealer says he can't get it because it's not in the system. Do you think they would order it if i were to bring this part number in?

Conicelli Toyota used to have it on their site, you might want to call them to see how much it is. 800-220-3788

When I rolled my Honda Accord... I discovered it had a full
alarm system (unactivated, because my model supposedly
didn't "come" with it) that only needed activation.
    So I believe you.

I would be VERY interested to hear if anyone knows how to
activate the alarm system in the Prius... (maybe "liberate"
a diagnostic scantool for a few hours?!
    )

    Thanks for the hint, keydiver

Here's how to activate the alarm that comes in the car de-activated:

Sorry you haven't heard from me about pricing for that part yet, I'm still waiting to hear back. Hopefully will know Monday.

Just wondering if you found out anything yet? The sooner I can get the GBS the better. :D
